My Monroe front struts, installed only 9 months ago, seem
to have gone bad. The front left in particular is now bottoming out with a loud "thump" if I hit a pretty regular bump in the road at speed. When first installed, they were great (with King Lows) but I thought they would have lasted longer than this !!! I've written to Monroe in regards to warranty, so we'll see how we go from there. Just thought I would see if others have experienced anything similar.....?? EDIT: 29/11/07 - Case Closed....Finally...!! They may not cover them under warranty as the car has been lowered. But they do state that the GT struts are suitable for lowered cars (30mm lower than standard) It sounds like you may have exceeded that 30mm and the bump stops have failed allowing the strut to bottom out steel on steel. Also when you first installed them did you bleed the air out (fully extending and compressing until silent operation) This could cause them to not operate 100%

Yep, the shocks were "bled out" as a prep at time of installation.
Monroe may well state that their GT shocks can go 30mm lower, but as you know Kings say that the 'low' springs result in an "approximate" reduction of 35mm. Will Monroe haggle about 5mm ??....We'll see soon enough. I figure it is generally very difficult to achieve an exact figure of 30mm, as all cars, "low" springs, and installations are slightly different. |

I have GT's on my Fairmont now but are replacing them this weekend with Ultima shortened shocks to ensure ample suspension travel.

If you are replacing the front struts, let me know how they go. The Ultimas may well be a good option for me to consider if Monroe don't come to the party.... |

A friend of a friend had trouble with monroe shocks, one kept repeatedly blowing out in his VP, he took it back a couple of times and had it replaced.
His car isn't drastically lowered either, just king lows.

UPDATE....
The front Monroe struts have been removed from the car and deemed totally cactus.....9 months is all they lasted. New units are in (KYB's) and the front end is back to its best. I returned the old Monroes, together with the labour bill for getting the new ones fitted, and have asked for a refund. This included letters to Monroe head office and the parts supplier. The guy from Monroe actually called me back, which was promising. Lets see how we go eh....!! Will advise of future developments. |

Ah well, you can't really complain then. If they're doing the right thing and not only providing a refund on the item, but also the labour then, that's pretty good.
Every manufacturer makes dud things at some point. |

Haven't got any refund as yet. They tell me that they will get sent back to Monroe for assessment. |

Yeah i had monroes die on me within about 10 months.
Mechanic told me it was uncommon. They have 12 month warranty tho so had em replaced free of charge, mechanic sent monroe the labour bill!

My last set lasted me less than 12 months - only about 40000kms and they were shagged.

Hi Scaffy,
The new struts are the regular KYB Excel-G type. KYB say that these shocks can be used in standard, tickford or "S" model E series cars. My springs are lows only, thus pretty close to tickford height. Link for KYB http://kyb.com.au/
