G'day all,
I'll type slowly and try to keep it simple so I can understand it- theres so much info here  I still have a question
I currently have 3.08- non LSD in my EF auto I6 Looking to only change the centres to a higher ratio of 3.7 or 3.9 with LSD Handling and trying to work out axle to axle would be a logistical nightmare and brainf#ck I don't want to sell a kidney so buying the gears and LSD seperately might save $$ and at least I know whats being used when I take it in to be reco'd and fitted. Will 3.7 or 3.9 gears fit in the 3.23 housing and give tighter LSD than 3.45 Sorry if I have this all wrong Anyones help would be greatly appreciated!!! Thank you in advance

the Ratio has Nothing to do with the LSD.

Will 3.7 gears fit inside a 3.23 case- that doesn't matter from whats been said because size of the case/housing has nothing to do with how tight the LSD will be

3.7 gears will fit in your standard diff housing mate. why do you want an lsd mate? just for better handling or burnouts??
if your thinking burnout then a mini spool or fullspool will be better and cheaper but will be a b**ch in car parks. i have herd of people paying around $1100 for gears and lsd supplied and fitted so that should give you a ball park figure.

Better handling yes, burnouts- maybe 
a few times I have read that 3.23 has tighter LSD than 3.45. I don't know why- thought the casing might have something to do with it but I am wrong Thanks for the clarifying answers !!

There is talk that the housing with a 3.08:1 diff is smaller than the 3.23:1.
I think the pinion area needs to be grinded to fit these gears in.

I think the pinion area needs to be grinded to fit these gears in. A wrecker near me quoted $200 for 3.23 with LSD- can't remember wether its ABS or not- I'll sort that out, anyway its a bargain and I have been looking at gears on ebay. Thanks again

yeah i paid 270 for my 3.23 lsd with tailshaft for mine (4 bolt flange) and thought that was great! seen the car it came from best described as 'old man syndrome' lol
one of the better investments ive made on that car.

Good news for once.......
Just driven home from the diff workshop. Had the centre replaced to add LSD and 3.7 gears in the 3.08 housing The mechanic said it should be a straight swap but it didn't so there was abit of machining envolved. Took 6hrs and these people were real easy to deal with, gave a warranty against workmanship of 100yrs LOL And what a nice drive home, in an hour the fuel consumption went down by .5L/100km and I think/hope that will improve. The idle hasn't been 100% for awhile but its alot better now! With me providing the LSD centre, (from a VL) and gears (Cortina) it cost $650. Thats a little dearer than other places but they offered some kind of warranty and seem to know what they are doing.

Dismantle and machine LSD, cone clutch clearance.
Machine & fit steel bushes. New diff bearings & pinion fail seal. They mentioned something about machining 20thou making the LSD tighter as it was originally at 85% tightness. Jeff, at Jack McNamara Differentials in Moorabbin, 9555 2213. They have a fantastic website with lots of useful info/pics and after calling a couple of places the choice was easy. When I got there they were more interested in doing the job then how I was going to pay for it! It turns out they only take cash. He showed me 2 wheel nuts from a hub adapter that did look abit rough on the edges so he straighten them on the lathe to make sure they would hold properly. Very easy to deal with.

It is more responsive/smooth and the fuel consumption was a nice surprise. Idle is so much better. The acceleration is kind of noticable- depends on driving style or whether I have PMT.
With 20" wheels and an auto if I'd gotten less than 3.7 I would haven't noticed too much- I think- maybe  .
Its hard to decribe but its the best money I have ever spent.

Braybrook Auto Wreckers 9312 2222 recently quoted $200 for a diff LSD 3.45 or 3.23. When they do have them they go pretty quick but if you really need one leave your number with them and they should call you when its in stock- hopefully.
