Following the auto to manual conversion guide i've almost got the (t5) box out of my donor car. I'm up to the part where the gearbox is phsyically coming out of the car but I havnt removed the starter motor... where is the starter motor? is it attached to the top of the gearbox on the passenger side?
any tips in removing it? |

yeah the motor will tilt back, that is normal, usually it will rest the rocker cover on the firewall.

Um what car is it coming out of? e-series? 6 or 8?
if its a six.... then You guys need to learn left and right and d/s and p/s. The stater motors on the passenger side.... and on the "right" side if looking from the front. But some handy info is when anyone is taking about left or right in reference to motor vehicles (be it cars, trucks, bikes) it is classed as if you are looking at the rear of the vehicle. And you should already have the motor resting on the fire wall before taking the bell housing bolts out... it makes it a hell of allot easier to get to the top ones. But with the manual box just undo the four bolts that hold it to the bell housing drop the box out (the t5 is not that heavy) then undo the bell housing pressure plate and so on. Warning though, the auto is F*#K'n heavy. definitely put a trolley jack under that one when its time too drop it out. Oh and you CANT split the auto from the bell housing when its on the vehicle. Oh and undo the exhaust where the cat bolts to the rest of the piping (near the box) this will allow the engine to drop back further and allow access to the bolts even easier (with a rattle gun no less)

or nearside and offside. nearside being the side nearest the gutter i do believe. i can have my t5 out in 45 minutes by myself. droppin it onto myself and rolling out on a creeper. have also done it without the creeper, if you can't lift a t5 i'd seriously start thinking bout your non-existant manhood.

Yeah thats it aye. The auto though... what a pain, they weigh a tonne (not literally). I got so sick of wrestling the bastards on the jack, I built a handy little setup that goes where the cup fits on the trolley jack to remove autos. makes it a s**t easier. Just strap it down and away you go.

yea ive changed a few autos in my falcon an jjez they are frikin heavy an absolute prick to do
i struggled with the starter mtotr for a few days until ifigured out wat tools i needed to do it then got a long extension socket bar and it was out with the old and in with the new in under a half hour:) and yes it is on the passenger side sorry guys but i thought i was bad with my mechanicalshehe itook the exhaust off from the manifold dump to the rear muffler and once u undo the box support bolts from the body it will tilt so u can get to the top bolts but u will have to wriggle it off an slide it while its lifted a little as it wont just all off lol and yes i also agree u will need a trolleey jack as no macho will hold them up at the angle and at such a low height i dropped 1 on me and had to wait a few days b4 i could even get back under a car i seen something here in this thread about the t5's so they aint as heavy and not as many bolts to do? hmm interesting as im doing mine soon aswell as a motor change with a bit of help frm flash anyways jus my bit of support cheers Drifty

Wow thanks guys, everything is a big help hey. At the moment the conversion is on hold till the sun raises and the hammeredness wears off
Think l I still need to get the starter motor off, I wasnt sure it was even on there to begin with but I know it will be. Glad the tilting of the engine is normal haha how the f*** does the engine just tilt back like that? isnt it firmly bolted to the car?? Keep yous updated. BTW it's an auto 6 and there's no way I'm attempting to hold that thing myself! trolley jack FTW |
