You said it happens when you slow down and when stopped...could be brakes as well.
Since all the force is moving forward while braking something may move in the rear, as you stop the car settles and makes the noise again. Rear calipers might be moving slightly or even vibrate. since you said it sounds like a rattle, I'd say exhaust hitting something. Check your rubber mounts at the rear half of the exhaust to see if it is sagging. If there is a bit of sag, that could make the rear half touch the rear axle as the car sits even.

Does the noise happen continuosly or does it do it a couple of times and eventualy stop?
To check bushes and control arms, get a pry bar or large screwdriver and apply up down and sideways pressure around the bushes. There should be no pronounced movement between the bush and its mounting point. |

I had something similar long time ago in my EL...
Was the LSD seizing up as you were slowing and coming to a stop. Only happened in drive when there was load on the drivetrain. Cost was a new LSD. |

So I feel like a bit of an idiot doubting my mechanic, but yeah.... he was right. I took the falcon out for a spin today and when the noise started, squeezed under and examined. I can't see which part of the exhaust is vibrating against the chassis but it definetly is. So I'm guessing the soloution is new engine mounts. They'd help eliminate the vibrating right? How much should I expect to pay for them? and Should I get them from ford or is it alright to get non-genuine ones elsewhere?
