My NC had Self levelling suspension when I first bought it, but the rear air shocks failed shortly after and I have since replaced it with pedders shocks and king lows. The SLS is fine until it fails, but when it does go it will drain your bank account to have it repaired, which is why I went with a manual setup.
To answer your question though, the SLS has a compressor in the front (LHS i Think) behind the guard. There is a level switch attached to your diff, which senses if the height is dropped due to increased load and adds more pressure to your shocks. The shocks themselves have rubber air boots, which on mine split and it was gunna cost me over $500 from ford to have them replaced. When you first switch on the car, you should hear the compressor kick in which will pump the shocks up to a set height. If you remove the fuse for the SLS and let the air out of the system, the rear end will drop down. Looks good but you will constantly get a suspension failure light up on your cluster and the trip computer will drive you nuts with it's beeping. There's probably a bit more to it than that, but that's a basic rundown of the SLS system. Cheers, Mick

thanks mick i had look under the car today while i was doing the exhaust and found a black bow aboust 3iches big with a plug that isnt pluged in and has a lever on it that goes looks like it is meant to hook up to the axle.
there is no light coming on the dash and the trip computer beeps like 3 time then goes quiet. should i get the linkl and plug the black box back in??????

yep. The link bar that connects to the diff should just clip onto a little ball fitting. To test it, remove the fuse and disconnect the air lines that connect to the top of the shocks and it should drop. Then do the reverse and see if it pumps back up. But if the system had failed, you would know as you would be dragging your a** end around. The top of the shocks are located in each corner behind the seats. There will be plastic shrouds covering the void.

here's a pic of mine with the failed SLS. had it replaced shortly after with pedders standard suspension, but it looked light a friggin monster truck so I dropped it with King SL fronts and Low rears
With the Pedders "standard" height and how she sits now with the kings

Definately got ya work cut out there champ! But there's nothing like a challenge eh! The old NC's are growing in popularity, so you should have a good project base to work off there.
Let the Mods begin!! Mick

thanks i like a challenge.
well i was just under the car again and was plugging the black bow thingy back in and found outhe the wires have been cut and the rest of the wiring have been removed looks like the system has been replaced once before and after looking at the top of the shock towers the old lines have been replaced with thinner black ones which run to the boot and connect ot a value and thats it no wires to anything else so i tryed to let the air out but none came out the car didnt lower so i think ill end up replacing it all with lowed king springs and shocks.

Sounds like yours has already been disconnected and converted to manual air shocks, especially if you have found a valve in the boot. Check your fuse box also and see if the fuse has been removed, should be on the top row in the middle, marked ' sls ' or something similar, would have been a large silver metal fuse. Remember if you are going to a standard set up you will need bumpstops.

by the look of things someone has changed the shocks over before. and as for the fuse it still has one but its just a normal 15amp (blue) fuse the only medal one is the power windows.
as for these bumpstops ive heard of them before but not quite sure what they are?

ok very close to lower the lane now been thinking about
What if i just put king super lows springs in the rear and left the after maket air bags in would this lower it and be fine or will i have to change every thing as i have let all the air out of the shocks but the car dosent lower at all so im thinking that the springs are the only thing that is holding the car that high?
