Hey guys
Ive installed the cooler and all but im not sure which line is the return line ( as i plan to run it in series). Ive located the two lines under the radiator where one passes below the other and has a brass coupling on it, also the car is a I6 ghia 96 model. any help would be appriciated guys. thanks

I *think* the top fitting on the side tank of the radiator comes from the gearbox... but not 100%..
Sure fire way to tell is to put a bucket down, kick the engine over... see which line the fluid comes from. dont forget to top up after lol.

yeah i can see that working, is there any fluid in the lines if the car hasnt been started for a day or is it all under preasure? like if i do what you said shouldnt fluid come out if i dont crank the motor over? or vice versa.

Nah, its not huge amounts of pressure that build up in there anyways.... there is fluid in there - but once you disconnect the trans lines from the radiator, it just tends to dribble out... certanly wont dump 10L of the stuff on your driveway!! Only gets flowing when the pump is spinning (engine running)

The top fitting on the rad tank is the return back to the tranny. 100% sure.

It shouldnt matter which line is used as they have no valves of any sort. But if you are unsure have a look at any EL Fairmont ghia as theu have as standard an extra trans cooler fitted.

i have an EL Fairmont Ghia and it wasnt optioned with the tow bar pack, so no extra tranny cooler, and seeing though i am plumbing it in series with the radiator i have to have the return line going from the extra cooler as to insure the tranny gets the coolest fluid. i just wasnt sure which one it was.

Towbars & tranny coolers were a Dealer fitted option on purchase order, same as mudspats/flaps, h'light protectors, bonnet protectors, rear louver/sunshades, roof racks, bullbars, spot lights, Shu-roo's, etc......
I think the genuine kits may still be available, but at the rate that the stock of old spares is running out, who knows. The top fitting on the radiator is the exit, so hook up aux cooler to this and the other end of the hose from the aux cooler to the pipe that went in the radiator top fitting. If I knew how to draw a picture on here, I would.

another way to tell is to run the engine for 10mins and then feel the temperature of the lines, the warmer one will be the inlet to the radiator

The auto was seiviced over about 12 months ago. and yeah i did try that method but i was only advised to let ig go for ten seconds, so it wasnt realy accurate.

will be fitting an external cooler to my BA next week - am taking the radiator out of the circuit unlike yours - BAs are remoured to suffer from coolant getting into the transmission fluid
external cooler sits horizontal so the lines for this just stay as they are on the radiator, one at the top, one at the bottom when i had my EF, it had an in series cooler and i could have told you which lines to connect if i still had it - it's all good anyway, you're sorted already |

yes true, good point though about having it seperate from the radiator though.
