I've got an EB Wagon with a 5 speed, but the car is getting on. I'm looking at getting an NL ('97) Fairlane.
I'd like to keep the manual, and was wondering if I can swap these two transmissions? The physical part doesn't worry me (pedal boxes, bolting together etc), but how possible is this? and what would be needed. A) Can the NL have it's ECU flashed/chipped etc to run on the manual box? B) Is the manual compatible to start with? (I believe both are on the wagon chassis, so I could swap tailshafts etc too) But wasn't sure about spline length etc. C) New bellhousings?? D) Would the auto fit into the EB so that I could sell it? (obviously, the car isn't in a great state, so I wouldn't want to spend big time/$ on this) E) Would the manual box handle the V8? (I'm pretty sure it will, coz the EB has ported & polished heads, extractors etc, so I don't think there'd be a world of difference) F) Gearbox rebuild/freshen up required? G) Would this affect tacho/speedo/trip computer on the NL? Also speedo on the EB? Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. Thankyou |

The tacho's are different for 8cyl.
I think you can use the auto V8 ECU, but if the late E series V8's have a seperate TCM too then the ECU may need to get some sort of signal from it..

Dellow used to have a bellhousing for the 8 to suit 6 cyl manual - not sure if they still do. That was back when EBs were new - and I was putting one in an XD.
You cant put the auto behind the 6, and as it is without a clutch, bellhousing, flywheel etc you wont get the manual behind the 8 either. Your better off for now, leaving it auto and saving up for a Mal wood conversion perhaps. Sell the manual 6 off for what you can get. And yeah - J3 chip is possible. Not needed so much for the 8 - they run a seperate TCM for the trans. Nigel |

Do a search mate, I've documented this conversion countless amounts of times. The guide I wrote is either on this index page or page two in the gearbox forum.
