ok im doing my manual conversion as we speak (type/read).
i followed the guide put up here recently, and have done all the wiring, resistor tricks, etc. only thing left to do is remove the auto and fit the manual. BUT... ive fitted all the new wiring (except havnt plugged the manual sensors in "reverse/neutral/speed") and had to move the car, but it wont start. is this normal?, i thought the "resistor trick" would allow the car to start because it thinks the auto is there and all good. p.s. battery is fine etc, het fuel pump whir, dash lights, but turn the key and its like the inhibtor is kicking in? p.p.s i moved the car with out power steering, but i ask as i dont want the car not starting once the gearbox is in at the workshop cos itll cost me more money. EDIT: i thought about this problem more after typing it (as you do) i assume the ecu need to see the reverse/speed/neutral sensors, dunno why as with a manual you can start at 80kph and in gear (while stopped) anyhoo any confirmation wowuld be good any help would be great Rushed |

Did one of these wiring tricks involve bypassing the neutral position switch & sending power to that terminal on the starter motor relay?

followed the manual guide, two resistors on the auto solenoid loom, for from memory; neutral and temperature.
the rest involved refitting the rest of the auto loom, with the manual connectors, for speed/reverse lights/speed sensors. im just worried that when i pick the car up on tuesday night that it wont start, i have hired two trailers soo far and dont want to hire another. i NEED this car running by wednesday, otherwise life gets VERY hard. thanks |

you need to bypass the neutral safety switch wires on the gearbox harness, cant remember the wire colours though, sorry...

The starter motor relay. It is one of the 4 next to the battery (unless they put it elsewhere in the EF). The power (or earth) that 'would' come from the neutral position switch to only allow the car to start in Park & Neutral needs to be run straight to the negative terminal on the battery. The computer couldn't care less, the relay needs to be 'told' that it is safe to allow the starter to operate.
Attached is the doco that I assume you are using. This bit (on an EB), cut & pasted from the bottom is what you seem not to have done: "All you should need to do now, is to go around to the front where the relays are. Remove whatever you have to, to expose the block of four relays - usually, just the battery. The starter relay is *usually* the one nearest to the passenger compartment - check, though, I dont want to tell you to do this to the wrong relay! heh...wrecked car...no thanks.. So, find the starter relay, then on pin 86 (read the underside of the relay) you should find two orange/black wires (colour and number may vary - PLEASE make sure you know which relay it is!). Cut these wires off an earth the ones on the relay side of the cut. I just soldered a wire to them and ran it round to the negative terminal on the battery, but a screw thru the body somewhere should work just as well. Now, the car should start!"

what he said ^^^^ and also if it dont start being a manual you could push start it, either that or hotwire the starter so you get it home for a look

That guide relies on the neutral switch in the T5 (I've wired mine as per the doco I attached above). If you don't have a box attached, plugged in & in neutral it ain't gonna crank. No box = no start . It should start when you actually plug your new wiring into the T5 & not before. Either don't try to start it til the T5 is in, temporarily earth the relay as above, or wire the neutral switch back the way it was for the auto (then back again for the T5).
