my god.. am i p****d off! haha
dont u love working on cars?? I love it! right, my plan was to change my front and rear brake pads.. front ones are beautiful.. back right hand side is nice too.. left rear is totally shagged! Behind the caliper there are two bolts which u undo when changing the brake pads..once u undo them they bolt into another "bolt looking thing" called a slide.. this is meant to slide in and out, hence the reason its called a slide. Well my top one is ceased in and im affraid ill snap it if i put too much force on it. Anyone had this problem? after a bit of research i found its a common problem on EFs, and actually the only left one does it.. funny.. Any ideas how to fix it?? ive just put my old brake pads back in.. cause the caliper fits on with the old ones, just not the new ones.. as there two fat, if the slide would slide it'd fit.. hope yas understand this.. lol |

I havent come across the caliper problem but realise this is fairly common.
Do you think it would be possible to loosen with some WD40 or the like, along with some persuasion?

a hammer and lithium grease helped me
I didnt realise that the slides were sticking on the front left caliper on my EB.. so any moderate braking would see the front left lock up Quite amusing!

i used fat man persuasion.. and wd40.. this thing is SHAGGED.. rang up jax and they told me the usual. "its gonna cost you x00 to fix" u need a whole new caliper.. tight a**'s, maybe i could just get a new caliper mount thing and slide??

wd40 is only good for a quick fix as it dries out and will sieze up again after abt 2-3 weeks.
proper fix, go to repco or smwhere and get PBR rubber grease its in a black tube. like toothpaste, abt $11 last you a lifetime as only a little bit required. take out the slidercompletely use pliers if u have to, clean it with some petrol or somthin if sh** wnt com off use some fine wet an dry paper dry only fine grit and wrk away until its new not too much. lather it with the rubber grease and pop it back in, u might have to take the boot out and clean that if its dirty, this is a permanent fix, as i have done it 3 pad changes ago and its still sliding like anythin.

Slider?!?!?
Didn't notice a slider when I replaced my rear calipers for the EA, or is it an EF-EL thing??? Do you mean the brake piston? Or do you mean how the outer pad and caliper is supposed to slide into the disc along the two retaining bolts when the inner pad is depressed against the disc?? My piston had seized, so I got 2 reconditioned ones from repco...

the slider isnt the bolt that runs through the twon holes with the rubber seals?? (as shown in pic above) if thats what your meaning, belt the bastard out and dress it up with a wire wheel, clean the hole with some emery paper on a round file, then grease it up with some lithium grease, and copper spray.. worked a treat on mine,, they were all 'almost' seized

I think you mean when you remove the worn pad, you're talking about pushing the piston back into it's zero position?
If so then try this if it is not budging - a G-clamp. Place the clamp over the center of the piston and slowly wind it back. It should work.

And yes, the slider he is referring to is the two mounting bolt for the caliper. As the pads wear down, so the caliper shifts to recentre itself. Ive been recommended rubber grease as well, so id be chasing osme of that

Thats a rear set from EA-ED if you look closely you will see the hand brake cable mount and lever on the rear of the caliper.

You don't need a whole new caliper, thats Bulls**t. IIRC the bolts run through a metal bush with rubber boots on each end. Remove the bolts then the rubber boots, if the metal bush can't be tapped out with a hammer then it may be easier to remove the caliper from the vehicle and do this in a vice, of course you will need to bleed the brakes afterwards. Once you have the bushes out if they are still servicable then clean them with some fine emery cloth or similiar, then grease them. If they cannot be reused due to damage caused when removing them then you should be able to get new replacements.
