I got no idea. I havent changed the oil before. All I know was that the ATF was like water and now using Penrite the gearbox is less notchy.
It says on the back of the Manual Gear Oil 75 that its for cars that originally were specified to have ATF oil and some specific examples are the T5/T56. I gave it a go and its better than ATF. I wouldnt hesitate recommending Penrite Manual Gear Oil 75 to everyone with T5s. |

yeah i used 2 use the same oil as you timmeh and i had no complaints what so ever. When i had atf in it, she made a hell of a noise and had a odd rattle when it sat there at idle. Both with my new fuchs and with penrite havnt had any strange noises

Hmmm..this thread is interesting.....Ive had a few gearbox issues, trouble engaging first or reverse mainly from start...but also sometimes it can be difficult to change gear whilst driving..I was thinking it was the clutch?
And I get a sort of small rattling noise at idle...soon as I press the clutch, rattle is gone...?? I'm wondering if my gearbox is a little worn, and if that Penrite Gear oil would maybe help it run a bit better....any opinions? Im still unsure why Ford recommend ATF, yet from what Timmeh said, the Penrite gear oil says its for T5? |

The noise is probabily your clutch throwout bearing.
I use redline shockproof in my T5 and noticed a definate improvement in shift feel. I think the XR6T's use transmax Z, so try that if it's cheaper than redline at $32 a litre.

I put Transmax-Z in it about a month ago...
Wil have to find a decent transmission place, see what they think...I reckon the box is shagged and the clutch on its way out too...I know 2nd gear synchro if buggered, its a b**ch to go 1st-2nd when accelerating...but cant afford new clutch and tranny overhaul....damn labour costs...I'd do it myself, but im not *quite* game enough...never did clutch or tranny before...its about the only thing I havent had a go of... |

Redline is definately too expensive to put in a gearbox (5 litres) but in the diff at 1.6 litres is fine and I'm using the 85w250 shockproof and it stops the AU diff from clunking and can be left in for hundreds thousands of km's
As for trans, I'd go for a fluid designed for high performance transmissions

Do not mix different bands or types of transmission lubricant. DO NOT USE GEAR OIL IN THE T5 TRANSMISSION SINCE THIS MAY DAMAGE THE BLOCKING RING MATERIAL. |

This is from Penrite.
Quote: Manual Gear Oil 75 (formely Manual Gear Oil Extra Light). A SAE 75W-80, synthetic fortified long drain oil for use where automatic transmission fluids were originally specified in manual transmissions and transfer cases. Specific Applications include transmissions in SAAB, Honda, Land Rover, MG-F, SEAT and BTR T-5/T-56. Meets API GL-4, MTF-94, ZF TE-ML02.
I'll be sticking with Penrite Manual Gear Oil 75. Thanks anyway. Aurora 98 the T5 gearbox only takes 1.9 litres not 5 litres. I bought 2.5 litres of the Penrite stuff and had a bit left over, not including what was left in the plastic tubing. 1.9lt in the T5 is correct. |

my last 3 services have been done using gear oil, from penrite to fuchs. And when it got its clutch done last year and a new shifter pivot put in the mechs at amberly auto said my box was in top s**t condition for the thrashing that i gave it. So im def sticking with gear oil.
Bugger BTR what would THEY know

HAHAHA time for some mining.
I've just put Transmax Z in the XR8 T5. I didn't know Transmax Z was green???? Anyway took a couple of litres of it. I'll keep the penrite gear oil in the XR6 but I've got Transmax Z in the XR8. I managed to do the gearbox oil by myself. Half under the car holding the hose in and half out with one hand using the pump. Took a while but its all good now. |
