Got two cars EF and EL that have manual T5 gearboxes and LSD 3.45 diffs.
I was going to put in redline oil but its too expensive. What oil is recommended to put in the gearbox and LSDs? |

for the boxes put normal auto-trans fluid in it. For the LSD's penrite do a lsd oil its bout ($20), dont bother with the hypoid oil, thats the oil that i got told to use with my dif after it got built. ask fras what the name of the oil is i gave him a bottle of it for that lsd he got bout 2 weeks ago.

HI
i recently had the same question about 5 speed oil... ford recomend use dexron trans fluid.. also most members here recomend dexron aswell.. but when i talked to gearbox reconditioners they said that i should use 80/90 gear oil..as trans fluid is a thiner oil it will give you a smother gear change but will get to hot under heavy loads and will cause the fluid to burn .. thats why the v8 t5 uses gear oil instead of auto fluid. so if you give your gearbox a workout or do towing i recomend using gear oil.. |

When I got my EF XR/Tickford diff (3/45 LSD) I went through all the manufacturers oil books (that I had lieing artound at work) to see what they recomended/said.
*Castrol SAF-XA (part number: 118975 I think) - this is the one I ended up going with! *Mobil SHC ID *Penzoil GPS 80W-140 *Penrite 10 Tenths Synthetic 80W-140 Valvoline SYN 75W-140 By the way, capacity of the diffs is 1.6 liters each. And don't forget to add some Nulon G70 with it - wonderful stuff that! |

Just went out to get some Penrite 10 tenths 80w 140 and no one seems to stock it. I went to Auto One like Frank said and then Repco and the Veale auto parts and then supercheap.
Must be good stuff if its this hard to find. |

Must be good stuff if its this hard to find. you wont find it at regualar parts shops like that. you'll have to look in some performance shops. |

HI i was told different i know ford recomend atf for the 6 cyl t5 . but i was told that gear oil will keep the bearings cooler. the guys at gearbox express said that they will not give warranty if atf is used in a t5. and i was also told that the v8 t5 is internally identical other than the length of the input shaft.. and ford recomends gear oil for the v8 t5. so why do ford recomend atf for 6 cyl t5 and gear oil for v8 t5 when the gear boxes are the same.???????????? p.s. im not trying to be a smart a** im just quoting what i was told. |

Well the car did have ATF in it and it was like water not very viscous at all.
I've put in Penrite Manual Gearbox Oil 75 and the gearbox feels a little better. Not as notchy as before which doesnt surprise me seeing as it was ATF. All in all I wont be using ATF in a manual gearbox anymore. Next oil change I may even switch to Redline seeing as I'm now well versed in changing gearbox oil (seeing as I've done one manual gearbox oil change now ). |
