Noticed some play in drivers side wheel. bearings are ok.
Pulled steering boot of and found the ball joint has about 1mm of play in it. The passenger side has no play at all. It looks like a sealed joint, so what exactly needs replaced? |

that joint can be replaced, some places call that the inner tie rod..
i believe it unscrews from the rack shaft... |

I call it a rack end... I think most places go by that... That is the rack end and then the joint at the upright is hence the tie rod end...
Where that washer is folded over the flats, you fold it back flat again and then as troy said it screws into the rack... That flat washer locates on something to stop it turning and hence holds the rack end tight... I had to change on the g/f's Lancer and due to the nature of no space in a front wheel car, we had to make a tool up to slide down over the tie rod, past that knuckle and two screws to do up on the flats to be able to get a tool onto it and undo it... I don't think you'll have any issue with a shifter on a falcon though... This will require you getting a wheel alignment... Try to measure where your tie rod end is before you screw it off so you can get it back in a similar spot to make it "reasonable" to drive to a wheel aligner... Cheers, Tim

I modded an open ended spanner for mine - the real tight ones I used a set of vice grips, and filed/cleaned up the dags after retightening up.I get mine from these guys http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Ford-Falcon- ... 58904cf30f pick them up when I go to Sydney.

Reopening a very old post...
Just wondering how much play is too much in the joint that "the scotsman" marked up in red? Mine has a little bit of play, but not much. I know the inner tie rod ends are quite cheap, but the alignment is an extra $60 and I had one done not long ago so I rather leave it for as long as possible. The joint does not look like a part that could fail completely and suddenly? |
