Hi everyone,
I was hoping to get some advice. I have an AU 3 XR with slop in the steering wheel. Basically as you drive down the road, the first inch or two of the steering has no effect. So you have to turn the wheel to about 11 or 1 o'clock before anything happens. It also feels overly light at this point, like it is slack etc. Once you get past this point the steering works fine. Power steering pump is ok, clean oil, no noises from the suspension etc. I like to fix things myself if I can. Where should I start looking? Thanks |

Check for play in the intermediate shaft.

I have just done a search on this and it sounds like it will be the problem.
Any idea where I can get one? It sounds like they were hard to find years ago according to the old threads. |

TUF250 wrote: Where should I start looking? - outer tie rods - inner rack ends - intermediate shaft (as mentioned) - lower steering column uni joints - steering rack mounting studs and nuts You could have play in the rack itself, but the most likely causes are the above. I will check it in a couple of days (away with work at the moment).
Shame that no one makes a replacement given how common it seems. Will a good one have almost no play at all if I wiggle it in the engine bay or should it be completely solid? Just want to know what to look for at a wreckers. Thanks. |

Spot on guys. There was a good half inch or more in slack each way from center.
I have a new one on order. should be here in a couple of days. The next question is how to stop this from happening again? I know the exhaust heat causes it. Can I buy some more heat shield and extend the factory piece to shield all of the exhaust on the steering side? Heat tape is considered a no no. Any other ideas? Thanks. |

Ok a problem. I have put the new shaft on. Problem still exists. It is a little better but 20% at most.
What is the next likely culprit? The steering is basically detatched/lifeless with no pressure of feedback from center to about 10 degrees either side of center. I notice that if you part with the wheels turned, you can't rock the intermediate shaft but at center you can. Does this suggest the rack rather than bushes? |
