So whats the downside of driving your car to work with no power steering fluid? I know it makes radio hard to here, and steering wheel "humm"

I guess I have a major leak as it only started minor noises yesterday on way home.

I'll fill it up and limp it home today. Can anyone point at the likely causes or places for such a leak and what I may be up for?

Thanks

Several places to check for leaks; the pump it self, the PSP switch ( located on the rack drivers side ), internal leak as in the boots are filling up with fluid. To refill the system when its fixed, use Ford fluid part number R1-424, its better than using ATF.

i wouldn't recommend driving it at all with out fluid in it. You'll damage your pump, and rack.

cjh has said a few, but also check the hoses for leaks aswell. Sounds like you might be dumping a fair bit of fluid, which could be the high pressure line.

running power steering with no fluid = new pump

check everything that has been mentioned above for leaks.

Its hard but ill try......

Running a steering system with no fluid in it, will not only = a new pump as said, but quite possibly a new rack.

The pumps run a vein setup. So if those veins are not lubricated, it will be metal on metal, causing heat and friction and more importantly shavings.

Those shavings with then get pumped through you lines, and into your rack. Then when turning the rack, those shavings will wedge themselves between the main shaft and the seal.

If this only started yesterday, you should be right for just a new pump.

Most common place for a leak on any E-series is the pressure switch on the rack. That failing, just behind the pulley on the housing part of the pump is very very common. In simple terms, look at absolutley everything to do with your steering system.

If it turns out you need (or want) a new rack or pump, let me know, as I build them for a living.

Hope that helps.

Thanks all for replies. Those who mentioned the switch get a gold star as my mekanik said it was the culprit and replaced it for $70.

The pump went alright when topped up with fluid and the pump was only empty/or near empty for the 20 min trip that morning so it might have survived??

The rack is only 3 years old so might be ok?

The leak was quite severe (under pressure) so it was a fast problem to appear. If you can mention anything i should be looking our for to see if the pump (or rack) are suffering, I bit mighty appreciative!

What I am now wondering is what does the pressure switch actually do? None of the plethora of fairmont warning lights told me there was a steering pressure issue? and the steering never got heavier?

hrmmmm me wonders

sorry guys, i know i'm slow, but i still don't fully understand what you mean by this....

and to ferret - that switch is like an idle up solenoid, so gives the ngine a little more revs when turning the wheel to avoid stalling.

They mean Ferret's sig pic. A bouncing rack.

And spot on with the switch.

Also, just keep an eye out for more leaks in the places I said before.

In about 2 weeks, take off the cable ties closest to the wheel (the small end) and peel them back just to check if theres any fluid inside the boots. Thats how you tell if you internal seals are rooted on a rack.

The pump, well, you will see the leak, so thats obvious.

Thanks guys. I guess I should have wondered how the car knew to idle up under steering load?

I'll be checking the driveway and those spots for the next few weeks.

Why should I do that? Its been running fine. Can you justify your statement, maybe point out a symptom i'd have?
