My Power steering has just started clattering like a jack hammer when its under load.

It only makes the noise when the car is sitting still, and you turn the wheel, (when its under the most load.)

When moving, (even slowly) its fine.

Could this be low fluid? I had a look at the dipstick but it was hard to tell where the fluid level was at.

Please don't tell me I'm up for a new rack, or pump :-(

Sound coming from rack or pump?

Jack the front up, and see if there is any play in the rack, or tie rod ends, mine is starting to do same, worn rack and shockies.

ive got a leaking rack at the moment, and if i forget to top it up it makes some pretty bad groaning noises. Get some power steering fluid and fill it up, and watch your problems fly right out the window :P

Mine does this too, and I am not losing fluid anymore.

Mine sounds like something it bouncing up and down really fast, making a chattering thumping noise. My mechanic said I needed to replace my tie rod thingies at my next service, as one of those it shuddering.

You can adjust the rack with a 20mm allen key.

So, If I'm going to top up the fluid, are there any pitfalls?
Or can I just go down to the Servo, get a bottle of DexronIII and it'll all be sweet?

Pretty much, so long as there's capacity left in the p/s resevoir (i.e. so long as you've got somewhere to put the fluid!!).

Cant hurt!

Ok, I topped the fluid up but it wasn't that.
Had to Syphon out the excess.

The new fluid was Red and the old fluid was a browny colour.
Wondering if I should drain it and replace it.

If $$$ parts need to be replaced, (ie rack, or pump) its going in the garage until May. (I won't have the money)

That brings me to another question.

Is the Ghia rack or pump any different to the GLi?

Its got Variable assist P/S. The Ghia (Fairlane and LTD) were the only ones to get it I think.
