Can some one explain what is going on ?
every now and then if i turn a corner under heavy acceleration it feels like the power steering drops out, steering gets very heavy for a few seconds then come good, also did it from a standing start under 3/4 throttle this morning turning off the Monash freeway. Car is a IL6 EL Fairmont

Is there a nasty sound like a belt slipping?
Other then that, check fluid level, but my immediate thought is belt slipping.
EL's have serpentine belt yeah? Is it even possible for that to slip?
Funny that, answers bring more questions :P

What about with the car sitting stationary, just dry steering it?

When was the last time your car had a wheel alignment?
Cause if it doesn't do it dry steering, then it can't really be power steering, cause dry steering puts a s**t more pressure on it that actually driving along.
I'd get it checked by a mechanic, cause it sounds like a possible suspension component problem to me.

is it the speed sensitive steering? is there some sensor that adjusts the amount of assistance due to the speed of the vehicle?

Sounds like your just pushing the car to its limits when cornering there's a greater load on the steering wheel because you're also accelerating out of the corner and forcing the front tyres to have to grip the road not to slide out.
