Hi guys,

I want to flush the power steering system completely on my NC fairlane. unfortuantely the workshop manual does not cover the correct method for doing so.

i know that you are supposed to take the weight off the front wheels and undo one of the hoses on the pump and feed it into a bucket, i was then told that while fluid is being tipped in you must turn the steering wheel lock to lock to pump the fluid out.

i want to make sure this is the correct method and most importantly which hose do i undo? cheers!

u need to drop off teh the low pressure hose
as this is the return line from the rack

and remove the spark plug leads from the plugs
the turn the engine over a few times and it should pump the oil out
DO NOT START THE CAR
it will empty the pump faster than u can fill it

so you cannot start the car by accident. causing the pump to seize and f**k everything :) removing the leads stops this from happening

low pressure hose is the one with a standard hose clamp on it

the high pressure has the crimped on fittings simalar to what u see on your aircon hoses

You don't have to wind the engine over, just turn it from lock to lock, and keep filling up the oil. Best to use Ford R1-424 Power steering fluid. It lasts way longer than Dex III tranny fluid.

Because it sucks the oil in one side of the rack, and out the other side of the rack. Believe me, it works, have done heaps of cars like that.
