hi guys.
anyone know if the s7 solinoid for converter lock up can be disconected in the btr 4 speed?? im thinking if i just disconnect the trigger from the ecu it may go into lhm. i know with the other solinoids such as the s3 and s4 there needs to be a resistance present to stop lhm. i can play the trial and error path but i thought someone may have played around with it before for whatever reasons.. now the main reason im wanting to disconect the lock up in the converter is due to a problem im having that hopefully can be sorted at a later date.( getting a box built with new converter in mid july) so its just a temp thing... i have the problem of the lockup constantly locking and unlocking every 3-5 seconds or so while driving on the freeway. i recently replaced the box with a secondhand one as the first auto cooked itself.. but i had this issue with the last box but thought it was just the box being s**t, i have tried different ecu's, i had the converter checked when i had the box out and was told its either ecu or gearbox related.. its either just coincidence both boxes have this issue or there is another problem somewhere.. so if anyone has any insight or info on the s7 solinoid or converter lock up it would be apreciated... |

Should cover it me thinks:

I know where to look.
You should be able to get away with a resistor to earth instead of the S7 line connected - as wazza found 100ohms, but probably make it 5 watts for the current flow. Actually, I quite liked the manual system - just needs to be set up well with proper brake switch cancelling, etc.

well i found that a t10 globe is enough load to not send the ecu into limp home mode it was by accident i found that out,
in testing i ran a simple on/off switch to see what would happen by just disconecting the s7 wire. on the ecu side of the wire i spliced in a std t10 light globe and earthed the otherside of the globe to ground.. the purpose of the light was to see when the lock up was being activated. disconect this globe and ecu goes directly into lhm, which i kind of expected. now with this i can switch the s7 off at my pleasure and if i wanted to add 12v i could switch it on and keep it on at freeway speeds like noted in the other linked threads.. anyway thats not exactly my plan.. what i did find that my torque converter lock up issue is not a mechanical one. the random lock unlock problem started while testing on the freeway and the light globe showed me the ecu is randomly powering the lock up on and off at speeds.. now to find out why? ive tried 3 different ecu's and same issue.. i cant seem to be able to get the ecu into diagnostic mode to check codes, this may be due to no injectors connected and no spout signal due to ems being piggybacked?? im thinking tps? but it is showing the right voltage at closed and full throttle.. i may just try a new one anyway, i cant think of anything other than tps and road speed that would effect converter lock up, any ideas????????? |

TROYMAN,
I have the same problem with my AU XR8. After doing some research, variables that control lock up include coolant temperature, throttle position, air conditioning signal, road speed, manifold vacuum, gear position switch, and power/economy switch. Mine is a lot worse using cruise control, sometimes locking/unlocking every few seconds, then fine for two minutes or so. I haven't managed to find the issue, but I have a new TPS on the way to begin to cross things off. Bloody annoying because apart from that, car runs great. Watching your thread with interest. Ian |

I noticed when I was playing around with the auto/man lockup, lockup stayed with some load on the throttle - back off like coasting, and the ECU would unlock the TC.
I'd assumed this was std ECU operation. I'm wondering if there's any crossfeed happening with the piggybacked ECU's.

it does unlock when i coast along but yes it will lock up again with a little load, when its playing up i can get it to lock by accelerating a little, but as soon as the car gets back up to cruising speed it unlocks again, so the only way to keep it locked is to keep accelerating lightly but i end up speeding to keep it locked.. eg once cruising at 100kmh it will unlock, then if i put a little throttle to speed up to 110 the converter will lock, as soon as i lift the throttle a touch to maintain the 110 it will unlock again..
the issue is maintaining a steady speed without it locking then unlocking, i can get the car to stay at speed but this is when the converter starts acting like a yoyo lol... sometimes after a freeway run, if i park the car for a while(20 mins to an hour) then drive back on the freeway its fine all the way.. maybe heat soak has an effect on the tps? it almost seems like the tps is out of sync with the amount of throttle required to maintain speed, thats why im thinking tps?? i guess the ems being piggybacked could have an effect?? the ems ecu shares water temp, air temp, tps and pip signals, the 5v signal reference voltage is supplied by the factory ecu.. hmm this could be a brain teaser! |

Hello, I have the same problem with my 97 NL Fairlane. Drives me crazy locking/unlocking while at cruise speed. I have changed the ECU & had the transmission serviced but the fault remains. Has anyone had any success with a cure??
Thanks, |

Changed the TPS on my 97 NL Fairlane but it still does the same thing. Anyone have any other suggestions to try ? Its so annoying with the converter locking/unlocking at cruise speed all the time.
Cheers. |

i still have the same issue also, i played around with the tps raising the base voltage up from .7v to near 1v with no change..
other than like minded people on the forums who brain storm ideas, all auto trans specialist cant help except for saying ill probably need a rebuilt box, most general mechanics have no idea, some auto electricians will only check the voltages and say i should try replace tps or take it to a transmission specialist.. im thinking about completely disabling the lock up permanantly by disconnecting the s7 wire from the box, then add a resistor to the ecu end to trick the ecu into thinking there is a solinoid there.. |

check / change the map sensor, the 4.0's use the map sensor to determine engine load, which can affect lockup

hmmm, ill check that.. as i have a aftermarket ecu the engine is not dependent on the factory map sensor, but it is still connected.
although, what about the v8's?? as they dont run a map sensor.. |

The ECU controls the trans shift and lockup on the 6-cylinders, and some of the ECUs have had the trans functions decoded so you can change them at will with a J3 chip. Don't know if yours is decyphered for TC lockup, but contact Jason at TI Performance with your ECU code - he'll be able to tell you.
