My AU2 is rapidly becoming not road legal due to excessive wear on the outside tread of the front tyres. I have done only 25,000kms on my Goodyear F1 GSD3s. I do less than 10,000kms a year in this car, and do a rotation and alignment every year. Most of the tread is fine, but the outside edge is badly worn. Is this a common problem with this model? If so, how do I prevent it from happening again?
I am running all stock suspension (IRS) at stock XR6 ride height. The shocks are factory and in good working order. It handles pretty well. The tyres are the prescribed 235/45R17 size on the factory optional Tickford alloys. I run nitrogen in them, and keep them inflated to 34-36 psi. I don't drive it particularly hard. I had identical tyres on my EF XR6 and got over 40,000kms on them - and I DO drive the EF hard (drags, hard cornering, occasional drifting ). Thanks.

What are your bushes/ball joints/tierods, etc like ?
Get a pinchbar or similar and go through them. Barring other problems, sounds like the outer tierods are shot, The car will normally have around 1-2 mm total front toe in, to counter suspension travel, and wheel flex - which all tend to toe the wheels outwards, play in the outers will obviously negate that. Most aligners will just plonk the car onto the hoist and check settings - nothing more, particularly tyre places - they don't call them 'toe and go' for nothing. Best you jack up the front, turn the steering wheel to steer lock, and check each front wheel for play. Oh, and check front wheel bearing play as well. Sounds like the IRS is okay - normally see AU's with inner tyre wear on the rears. Not as bad though as some VT/VX commodores.

Thanks muchly for the advice. I guess I should have thought of the basics first. Yeah, I do tend to trust the tyre place to let me know about any problems. Will check it out myself. If you want it done right.....
Thanks.
