ok stupid question, but you always see them advertised according to the car, but they're gearbox specific right?

is there anything else to them that makes, say, a holden VY t56 shifter not work on a ford t56 equipped BA? ie the positioning with regards to lining up with the hole in the floor? or are they all in the same design as whats on the gearbox to start with?

i have an EL with a t56 and i want to see what options there are for me.
