Hi All
In my 92 EB, I have a rumble coming from the rear while coasting/cruising. It only seems to be apparent while not on the gas or using engine braking. Can anyone advise what the problem might be? I would appreciate any suggestions. Regards BenJ

Wheel bearing would be my first choose.Jack up rear end and turn wheels by hand etc.,

Got the same problem with my EL - damned if i know what it is though.
The old XF use to the exact same thing as well. I'm gonna watch this thread closely... |

check uni joints on tailshaft for play,could be the balance on the shaft too thats what my problem was seems similar.does it stop as soon as you give it some gas?

yeah on mine, you can only hear it when windows are up and your coasting. As soon as you give it a bit of accel it goes away. Pretty annoying problem considering i work with car suspensions!! Just need time though to have a proper look.

Hey Guys
Thanks for the replys. I know what a wheel bearing sounds like and it sounds different. Also, I can feel it as much as I can hear it. The rumble only seems apparent when you are on a slight downhill run and the engine is only just maintaining the speed. As soon as you place some load on the engine it goes away. My car has a lot of kays on it. Just shy of 370000 in fact. I know the auto and engine have been redone at some point, but the diff probably hasn't been touched. Luckily I have my previous EB which has only done around 230000 ks. It has an identical diff in it and it didn't make the rumble. I might just swap it out and while I am at it replace the uni joints. Any other suggestions? Regards BenJ

Sounds to me like the rear UJ has gone, would be a waste of time changing the diff. Does it do it mainly over 80km/h? if so yeah the rear UJ.

It also does it at 50 and 60 ks. But changing both uni's first wouldn't be a bad idea. I could always just swap tail shafts from the other car and see if that makes a difference. Thanks for the suggestion. Regards BenJ

my old ef did this, if you backed off or accelerated it wouldn't be heard but if you were maintaining a constant speed you could. the diff was stuffed - i assume the centre, as the oil colour when i drained it resembled mercury silver.

Mine does it with torque convertor locked in at 75kmh. Mines the reverse, take load off and noise turns from rumble to faint a drumming sound.
Suspect mine is both, torque convertor moving up and down on it's rod arm thing, and uni's. |
