hey guys i mentioned in reply to the option 20 question that i might have f@#ked my gearbox and its leaking, have since found out it is the rear engine seal thats busted. i know you have to drop the gearbox to replace it.
my question is, how had a job is it? what else do you have to do apart from changing trans oil. if its in the too hard basket, is there any good trans shops in sydney area that can do it, i got qouted over $350 by one guy so far, is it a talk up or resonable? thanks

Thats not a too bad a price, it cost me $300 to remove tranny, replace seal and rear welsh plugs, both supplied by me. Then service the box and reinstall. That was mates rates.
Most tranny shops should be able to help you out. I'd recommend one but it would be a bit of a drive for you.

If you do it right, you can take the trans out at home without dropping a bit of trans fluid. After the trans is out, the flywheel needs to come off
Some decent ramps and stands, 2 jacks and decent strength tools and your set. If you dont have those, I probably wouldnt attempt it. 45mins to an hour is needed take the trans out. 10 mins to swap seal, then an hour to put it back in. But its a s**t pain in the a** job for a $7 seal. And I think most garages make decent $$$ out of these jobs on the pain in the a** factor alone. |

thanks guys for advice, might be able to see tranny specialist if i get accepted in navy hehe.
tell you what makes an interested drive in the wet, low fluid in gearbox it slips, wet road back wheels crab walk when gearbox stops slipping,

topping up fluid each time i drive somewhere, can usually last two days before refilling.
damn apprentice wages otherwise would've been fixed by now

i know the only way to fix things is properly but is there any thing i can do for a temporary fix on the fluid leakage for this seal?

There is no way to fix this seal without replacing it... Its just one of those b**ch jobs that has to be done.
But are you sure its the rear main thats leaking. I usually find that rear mains will leak just a little, few drops most times. And that the real cause of a big loss of oil is the rear part of sump gasket. Either because the bolts have come loose, or the seal has just generally shat itself. And it will appear to be coming from the same place as a rear main. This is still a big job. Either engine out, or K-Frame drop. But just check the bolts on the sump, make sure they are tight. Or drop the rear of the sump and stuff some gasket maker in there, and tighten it back up. The latter has worked well for me for the past 6 months. I dont loose oil anymore, nor do I come back to a nice puddle every morning. Is your an EA to ED or EF/EL? |

tis an ef ex detective, its definatley the rear engine seal cause its leaking bout half way up the drivers side of torque housing area.
i've got a tranny shop fixing it for me in the next couple of weeks just have to keep the fliud full eh. whats the possibility of any damage to converter?
