I also have the same problem, been giving my car too much of a hiding !
Everytime I slow down (de-accelerate - NOT apply the brakes at all) it will knock consistant... but lightly... and it knocks consistent when braking.. i'm hearing it most of the times, but there are times i can't hear it.... - knocking sounds are coming from the BACK OF THE CAR (might be both sides, but because i'm in the driver seat i probably can only hear it from the rear right??). Some people have said, maybe it's suspension bolts.... but it shouldn't come lose cause the suspension has been in the car over 4 years ?? it has superlows. I checked all my wheel weights... on 3 of them, they have like 4 weights... on the rear right rim... there is like 8 or something weights.. anyone know what's with that? they are EL-GT copies, my old man has buckled a set of copies (EL GT & BA Rims) ... so maybe my rims are buckled as well ? I'm going to pull the rear wheels off tomorrow and fiddle around, hope it's nothing serious... like axels or something cause i had been doin standy's on grass... but shouldn't affect anything I have a '94 ED Fairmont any ideas? |

Just means that rim needed more weight to balance dont worry about it

I thought it might be the uni joints but when i got under and tried to shake the tail shaft there was no movement at the joints. by hand anyway. |

When you checked the uni's was there much freeplay in the diff? Also did you check that the rear transmission mount was tight and did not move at all?

i got under my car & there was a bit of movement when pushing uni joints up .... hmm and when turning it by hand... it turns a bit then i can hear like gears engage...
hmm and my rear bush's are screwed... dried and cracked |

I'd get someone experienced to have a quick look. Maybe get a mechanic or two to quote you on the problem. Its a bit hard to diagnose without seeing how much freeplay you actually have.

It will not be the UJ's as if it was there will be a drivline hum over approx 80km/h. I would put my money on the upper and lower trailing arm bushes. More likely to be the upper ones. Does the shifter (if auto) move back and forth whilst under load and going over bumps, if so its definately the trailing arm bushes.

if it's constant when backing off, it's probably more like diff wheel bearings or main bearing or crown wheel or whatever its called.
my old ef did it, but only when you backed off the gas, or braked.

i ahd same prob and worked out it was shagged lower control arm bushes and the tailshaft was hitting the floor....replace with noltec arms and after 2 weeks started happening again and found the new bushes were shagged and got another set from noltec (free) and the car has been fine ever since
