quick question.
the rear main seal in the fairlane has gone and i obviously need to change it. Q is ,is it as easy as pulling the engine out to get to the seal and replace the engine or is it a bit more complicated that that? cheers

No between $500-$600.
Its not all that much work for these guys as they remove trannys all the time.

The rear main is $6, the rear Welsh Plug is $3, a trans filter kit is $30 and oil is about $100. If anything they might have cut down the labour a bit. But then, there are no more than $160 in parts, which leaves $200 for labour. At $50 to $60 per hour, this allows 3 to 4 hours labour. And any tranny speciaist worth their salt can have a tranny in and out on a hoist in 1.5 hours, considering I can do a tranny swap in just over 2 hours under a car on ramps, including a smoko break. I would have thought the $350 you paid would be nearer the normal price any mechanic will charge. |

how do you know that its the rear main?
check all other avenues before you go spending money, i thought mine was blown, but it was leaking from the oil pressure sender, down to the back of the engine, and over the bellhousing, which makes it look like its a rear main, so dont get fooled. check it out at least. |

I would have thought the $350 you paid would be nearer the normal price any mechanic will charge. only the smaller mechanic shops will touch a car for $50-60 an hour, my work just bumped the labour cost from $72 to $79 an hour and are still cheaper than a lot of other mechanics. being done by a trans shop ( in other words a specialist ) the wages are higher therfore the labor cost is higher. i specialized in steering and suspension for 2 and a half years and left for another job as i wanted to do more mechanical work instead and took a pay cut of about $6.50 an hour for not being a specialist anymore. |

I supplied the plug, seal and corrosion inhibitor. $272.73 plus GST
