I was'nt sure which forums this should go in as there's none for 'wheels/tyres' but i'm about to replace my tyres (16" XR6) and am wondering if i should buy remoulds as they're alot cheaper, have sporty tread patterns now, and i don't really go over 140-150 which they apparently are safe up to 180.... I have some on rear atmo and they were fairly greasy until they wore in but after that they've handled/worn pretty well.... Also remoulds are safer than the older 're-treads' apparently... Any opinions or good/bad stories???

I would not go near re-caps/remoulds. Basically the only thing between you and the road is tyres.

Well i been doin some online research and they sound very safe (alot more than retreads) as they're H rated (not sure what speed that is) as the actually remoulding process is only done if the casing is safe/useable and the the new rubber is pressed/forced onto the casing while obviously being melted...They should also last just as long as new tyres under 'normal' driving and they're also enviro friendly as it's reusing an old tyre and the process uses less materials and fuel to make them....And they're cheap!!! I'm goin to get me some me thinks

Dont drive above 80 in hot weather and dont drive above 60 in very hot weather. they are ok but saw alot of claims (sepperations) during summer. I wont use them and I used to sell them.

I've run retreads on the last few cars i've had, and I'll keep running them. Have had a couple come apart on me after excessive driving but no big dramas. If you drive easy and under speed limits then go the retreads.

when you see all the treads spread all over freeways from trucks, guess which ones they are, remoulds/recaps or new tyres?
I wouldn't go near retreads/remoulds when you can buy a quite decent tyre for $70 odd now a days. |

Never would I risk my families lives to remoulds. I used them years back, they didn't last very long (6 months normal driving) so they can be a false economy.

Not really a fair comparison. 30 odd tonne versus 1.5. 1000s of ks a week vs 100s of ks a week. I've got remoulds on now, didn't buy them specifically, they came on some rims I bought. Apart from one being badly balanced, and the fact the tread is noisy as f**k, they seem to be alright. From all the bad press they get I was expecting something that had no grip, and delaminated the instant you hit 100km/h. They are better gripwise then Sava Intensas. I've had them on for a few 1000 ks now, they went well on a cruise along the great ocean road. Having said that, I'm getting proper tires put on this Friday, but I don't think they are as bad as everyone makes out.

mate just save up the money and buy a good set of tyres it is worth it in the long run'' retreads ar ok just to use until u can get good ones. it will be better than no tread at all. and saves a bold tyre fine as well thats my 2bobs werth

get some decent tyres. tyres are the limiting factor of any car, being the only thing in contact with the road. if cost is such an issue, look for a good second hand set of quality tyres, theres lots out there to choose from.

U can get Bridgestone RE88's 4 about 80-90 buck on special i think at bob janes...

When I worked with trucks we used retreads on the drive wheels and on the trailers. I fitted eight new tyres to the White Road King we were running and the first lasted all of 10 ks. Was about 35-40 degrees and all eight finished up letting go within 70 ks, Lotsa work and heaps of beer afterwards
Have used retreads on my runaround and had trouble with them too. In my experience retreads cost only a slight bit less than good tyres so I'd go the good tyres.
