No worries, that's true, one can have a good spare one for under $1,000. However, what I've been told by a person working in the auto transmission repair industry that most, if not all, trannies going through their workshop replaces everything including solenoids whether it's needed or not....industry standard...so I was told.....no wonder those companies charge a fortune and the prices of gearbox are so high. This is many years later but I had a gearbox do exactly the same thing. I suspect the box I have was rebuilt some time before I got it as the shaft seal was soft and flexible and the pump gasket stayed intact during disassembly. Once I pulled the pump apart the pump drive was stuck on the stator shaft and the two tabs from the torque convertor were sheared off. First time I had driven the car with a horse float on in traffic. It just lost forward drive. Once the car was home on the back of a tow truck I started it up and drove it up the driveway. After that it never moved. I can only guess that the pump drive is heating up and binding to stator shaft. The engine has no trouble shearing off the torque convertor tabs. I swapped in another pump drive and so far so good. The first drive was towing a 1T trailer. The dirty computer connector pins caused the speedo to drop out, which then caused the box to shift down under no throttle in preparation for take off from a stop. Not good at 70km/h the box quickly realised some thing was not right and shifted to neutral. |

The wood and bottle jack under the crankshaft pulley is my chosen method but just pay particular attention to anything that gives resistance. I've done mine with the harness still attached and the radiator still in. Obviously gearbox harness is detached. MrFrank also gives good advice, the more extension the better for the bellhousing bolts. so how long does it take you to do a BTR swap time wise now ? also are you going pot luck wreckers boxes or ? |
