G'day again,
I'm planning to remove the auto trans next week. Is there any other items or tricks I need to do in removing the gearbox, apart from what the workshop manual says? I'm sure there would be a few forum members have done this. I'm using a hoist next door but there is no gearbox trolley jack...any suggestions on how to lower, secure and raise the gearbox. I can tell you the gearbox is bloody heavy. Cheers |

I can also re-assure you that having done one by myself, it's one of the heaviest gearboxes I've done solo. Nothing special to really look out for.
I usually tilt the motor back with the mounts loose to gain access to the top bell housing bolts.

Thanks, yeah it is heavy, took two people to lift the spare gearbox out of the ute. It still weighs heavy when the torque converter is removed. When you say loose mounts, is that the cross member where the rear extension housing sits or is that the engine mounts? From my understanding (reading in one of the books), after removing the transmission cross member , place a piece of wood between the crankshaft pully and front cross member. Radiator fans come out, disconnect battery leads, remove starter motor, remove front exhaust pipe where catalytic converter joins. Remove driveline (tailshaft) and mark location. Remove electrical connectors and gear linkage connector. Remove plastic cover (without damage) to access flywheel to undo torque converter bolts. How much room is there with the plastic cover removed? Might be bit difficult getting a torque wrench up inside to tighten to spec. Cheers |

Its not plastic, its a thin metal dust cover.
Easy as, just put a 1/2" wrench on the harmonic balancer bolt to turn the torque convertor around til a bolt is easily accesed, same thing for the rest. I'm about to change the gearbox on my ba. Again. Lol.

It's been a plastic cover on all my autos. It's fairly small so you need to keep winding the motor over to access all the bolts.
The wood and bottle jack under the crankshaft pulley is my chosen method but just pay particular attention to anything that gives resistance. I've done mine with the harness still attached and the radiator still in. Obviously gearbox harness is detached. MrFrank also gives good advice, the more extension the better for the bellhousing bolts.

No worries, I'll keep that in mind. I'm using neighbour's car hoist. He reckons he has some type of gearbox trolley but I would not know. Either way it's going to be a big job. Neighbour reckons 2 and half hours ...I don't know about that, if it's that easy I'll get the neighbour to do the job but I would not count on it. Might take longer than 2 and a half hours. Double that with placing the gearbox back in position. Maybe 5 or 6 hours? How long did it take to do yours last time? Cheers |

The last time I did it was a manual conversion in half a day without a hoist...but I've done few.
Swapping autos shouldn't be too time consuming, specially with a hoist and trolley. Set out the whole day then if you get it done early you can have a few extra beers and appreciate will you be servicing the filter in the auto? would be advisable while you're there.

I'll be doing this job on Thursday, I've done similar on Leyland Marina 6cyl many years ago, that was very straight forward, BorgWarner 35 series Auto, without a hoist, yep, took a few hours. Slightly different to the modern cars. I'm greatfull I've got access to a hoist, not sure about the trolley jack though...neighbour reckons he has something designed that will take the weight of the transmission, which will be helpful...I have not seen it as yet but will do on Thursday. I certainly will have a few beers afterwards...after I come back from a prawn farm that is. I've already changed the filter over on the gearbox that's going in. Replaced the Rear extention housing seal as well as front torque converrter seal just to be safe. Unfortunately it will take me a bit longer as my sciatic nerve is giving me curry again. It was in my right leg , now the mongrel is on my left leg. Oh well. See how it goes. Cheers, Peter |

No worries, thanks, job was done today i.e. Thursday 17th January, took 6 hours all up, remove and replace gearbox. All seems to be working ok. I got the problem gearbox, I'm going to find out what caused it to fail and rebuild it, Solenoids are good. Cheers |

As true to my word.
The torque convertor metal tongues ( the two pieces of metal sticking out) were sheared or broke off. Oil pump was seized Spindle drive was wobbly. everything else is ok. Bands are good and reusable. Torque convertor + new oil pump + new seals + filter kit...labour costs to strip and rebuild $980.00 Cheers |
