so i replaced my diffs pinion seal, then today when i was driving my diff was clunky, so i got underneath the the car and the pinion nut some how came loose, i dont think the flange was on the spline all the way.
anyway i tapped on the flange and took of the pinion nut, then i put on the pinion nut and tightened it so it was lined up with the marks i had made. i take it for a drive and now its leaking worse than before i had replaced it and before the nut had came loose. i replaced it with a $5 seal from auto barn, could that be the problem ?? maybe a genuine ford seal? also is the seal supposed to sit flush with the diff housing ?? the old seal was sitting flush? but i thought maybe it moved forward so i tapped the new one is as far as it could go which was about 5mm from the diff housing. or would new oil stop it leaking ?? im using penrite 80w140 semi senthetic thanks in advance

i wiped all the oil off the diff. waited for a bit and it wasnt leaking, took it for a drive and it starts leaking.
what i think has happened is when the pinion nut came loose or maybe it was that i didnt have the flange on the spline all the way, it must have damaged or pulled the seal foward. so tomorrow ill take it apart check the seal and wack it all back together, with new oil , i hope the seal isnt damaged. any opionions ??

no one ??
well can anyone tell me where the seal is supposed to sit in the diff housing ?? flush with the housing or 5mm in from the housing ?? it was flush with the housing when i took it apart but im not sure it it has moved or not ??

as you have not done the nut up correctly you may have damaged the pinion bearing, or damaged the new seal from the excess movement from the pinion flange moving around..
im pretty sure the pinion bearing has collapsable shims to set preload, over tighten or not do it tight enough can cause the shims to collaps.. |

I don't see how i did it too tight or too loose, as I tightened it up to the marks I made , I'm pretty sure the seal must be stuffed as its leaking bad and not making Any noises .I'll replace it and see how it goes .
Do you know if the seal sits flush ??

The splines do leak oil past them. I use silastic on the splines during assembly.

Yep - plenty of oil around the locknut area indicates that.ef_falcon_95 wrote: Do you know if the seal sits flush ?? From memory - it does sit flush with the housing, did you not note the positioning of the original ??The flange will have seal wear, so it's easy to compare positioning.

I did take note when taking it apart but I thought that the oil may have pushed it forward due to a blocked breather but breather is fine .
I'll put the new seal in flush and blue silicon around the spline and nut with new oil and hope it stop leaking .

So where was the leak originally ?? - if there's no oil leaking under the dust cap ring, then it's not the seal.

The leak was coming from the dust cap ring and still is. I didn't use any silicon so it could be leaking through the spline and running down the seal and out the dust cap ?

Nah, sounds like the seal - if it was running down the spine, as mentioned, you'd have oil around the pinion shaft locknut.

Should I put loctite on the nut to stop it coming loose again ?

Well I know why it was leaking . Auto barn gave me the wrong seal .
I got a new seal from a local auto supplier and it was a much tighter fit. I put blue silicon on the front of the seal and spline and loctite in the nut . If it leaks or comes loose now f**k me dead lol Filling the diff up with oil now so fingers crossed
