Hey guys, I went to change my power steering hose today, but I'm a bit puzzled at how I'd actually take off the end on the steering rack.
I've got some photos here as well. I noticed that it actually seems to be leaking from the gold nut here, that the power steering hose goes into, I just bought the replacement hose from Repco, where can I get a new nut from? Or can I just take it off, seal it with some thread sealer? This is the nut I'm trying to get off, but there seems to be no room to undo it with a spanner, it hits up against the body, maybe I need a stubby spanner? |

I don't recall much issue getting the power steering hose nut off... From memory you have to undo the bracket that attaches the hose to the crossmember (may also have to get at the steering rack nut from underneath). As far as that nut goes, I believe there is an O-Ring seal inside - replacing the O-Ring should do the trick.
Also, do everything at the same time, because I believe the power steering hoses have a teflon seal that is essentially f**k if you try and reattach it... although ymmv. Thanks, Thomas. |

From your friendly Ford dealer, BA 3F656 B for about $12.00. Just make sure you screw the nut into the adapter on the pump before you put the pipe on the hose into it.

Yes, exactly. Wouldn't hurt to put some power steering fluid on the end of the pipe first.

I recently had some experiences with my power steering pressure line that had me cursing so much my neighbors won't look me in the eye anymore.
My extractors made the bottom hose connector nearly impossible to put back on.. If it wasn't exactly lined up with the thread it would not thread on... I spent more than an hour getting an angle that worked. (in my case I had to ever so slightly bend the pipe to change the angle.) Then it turned out that the spare was dodgy too, so it still leaked from the pump end of the hose. I had some locktight stuff that I'd bought to seal the LPG gas fittings and I was desperate so I the hose out of the PS nut fitting and put the locktight sealer around the seal area liberally. Then I headed off to buy a new PS fitting thinking it would probably still leak. The replacement is now hanging from a hook in the shed and it's been over a year with no PS leak at all.. so I surmise that the fluid pressure pushed the Locktight LPG sealer into the leaking teflon seal thing and sealed it up nicely. I don't know what property that stuff has that does the job but I can tell you that my hose is bone dry externally and I've not added any fluid to the unit for over a year. (since the day I put the LPG sealer in.) I'm stoked, because although I have a spare hose, I have a ton of LPG gear I'd have to move and extractors I'd have to work around to get that hose in place. (I have the spanner I cut in half last time to get to the bottom bolts, but it's slow nasty work and I had pretty cut up hands by the time I was done. If you like I can find the number locktight I used.. I still have the tube in my shed. cheers Frank |

I used a BA nut and some black silicone... hasn't leaked a drop since.

I bought the nut today, $12 cheapest replacement part so far that I've bought for this thing, lol.
We've got some locktite thread sealer at work, might have to borrow it. I've also got a new alternator but I'm not going to replace it until I've done the hose. |

I just had a look at the nut, I think its the wrong one, its much smaller and it doesn't have a thread on the big end of it to screw the hose into.
Is it because mine is a Fairmont Ghia with speed sensitive steering? |

thats the replacement nut to go on the pressure hose at the pump end.
the pipe slips into the back of the nut locking it into position, once its on the pipe it cannot be removed... does your new hose already have a nut on it?? if your using a second hand hose, the old nut needs to be extremelly carefully cut off... |

Its a new hose from Repco, but it has the nut on it already, is there a hose I can buy without this nut on it?

if its a new hose you dont need that replacement nut...
that replacement nut is for when the hose leaks from that fitting, rather then replacing the whole hose there is the option to jest replace the nut... |
