I am going to be replacing my ball joints and changing from a shim type camber kit to a thread adjustable kit.

Are there better ways/tools to aid in separating the steering knuckle?
I ask as When I changed my rack I had a hard time removing the tie rod ends so I assume 4 ball joints and 2 tie rod ends will give me grief.

Cheers

Cheers mate, I am thinking getting the air hammer onto the steering knuckles, That should loosen them up a bit!

Why is that?

Mine is shimmed to the limits and the camber is still present.. Understandably the ball joints arent helping but I have the nolothane kits and the control arm bushes are effed too..

Yeah, I just bashed the s**t out of each ball joint with a hammer starting with the top then tie rods and lastly the lower ones, was quite effective :D .

Tomorrow I will buy a shop press and install the new ball joints..

Also got the new camber kits installed (were shim type after all!! :x ) Well the bushes were shot so, MEH..

Cheers Hans for the advice!

Do you honestly need a 20 ton press?? thats insane!

So the 6 ton unit I was going to buy isnt sufficient?

Got the circlip pliers and was going to use an offcut from a steel pipe to fit the ball joints.

6 big may be,10-15 might,20 i think easy as most work shops have them.hav to push on the out side, square press.how tight, i dont know as the serated bit squashes to fit the hole, measure the new ones for pipe sizes and length.pedders done mine last week.

Well fortunately I am the am the manager at Super Cheap so if the 6 tonner doesnt do the job, we can have a nice display for customers to look at I suppose.. .

I have seen (though we do not sell) some G clamp looking ball joint presses that look like they'd do the job too so thats always an option.

So I got the ball joints out (makes one hell of a sound when they let go) but unfortunately the lower ones are alot harder to press in and I could only get the top ones in

So looks like it will be a trip to the professionals on Tuesday  They were an absolute pain anyway!

Lesson here: 6 ton shop press isnt sufficient.

Mr220kw :)

I have seen these used before (simmilar anyway)
They do seem to be alot less awkward to operate..BUT the ball joints on an EF are in the knuckle not the control arm so I would have to buy a big a** vice to stop them from moving..

I will look into this though as we do have a few decent specialty tool suppliers we order from.

Cheers for that mr220kw!
