Hey everyone,
I have a 1988 ea falcon s with a 3spd automatic transmission.
The other day when i started the car, i put the car into reverse and the car just revved as if it was in neutral.
Previously to this i had reversed out of a car park and driven for about ten minutes before stopping again. There were no odd sounds when i reversed or when driving.
I heard from a couple of people that this sometimes happens to these transmissions and that there was a simple way to fix the problem.
If anyone knows how to fix this problem could you give me some help please or if there is no simple way, some costs involved in getting it repaired.
Thanks for any help.

The first thing to do is check whether you have transmission fluid. If you have fluid at correct level then unfortunately sometimes the first symptom of a failing older style auto is the loss of reverse.

Its a common problem with the 3 speeds.

Because they generally slam into reverse, it puts a big load on an actuating lever in the trans and eventually snaps it.

If it is this, its a $130 or so repair from an auto or mechanic shop.

The pan and fluid has to be dropped to get to it.

If its a 3 speed auto didnt these used to just snap the band? - wasnt the quick fix a replacement band that was designed to be slapped in without trans removal, bringing it back to life?

Cant remember - its been that long since I had a 3 speed
