Interesting issue has arisen. It seams I have misplaced reverse somewhere. All forward gears work fine, reverse however. it will engage, but massive amounts of slip, its going to the transmission guys on thursday, but, I was wondering if anyone has experienced this. I have not had an auto for years.. Can't imagine what turned me off them???
I have spoken with a few people, some have suggested solenoid, others a broken band. To be honest, I have no idea what the condition of the box is or when it was last serviced. But I am somewhat keen for it to stay in the car, unless of course it turns out to be terminal and cheaper to throw a T56 in there. I hope it does not come to that as I don't have that sort of coin laying round right now. So with the limited info I have supplied, give me some ideas what I may be in for. oh and an exchange box is almost out of the question as the BTR's in the T series as a bit different to a standard box. But may share some internals with BA 4 speed automagics. I will be checking on this thread regularly for advice. So ask any questions and I'll answer as best I can Cheers, Dave

I have never seen a broken BTR rear band - They are tough !
What you will probably have is a worn out C3 reverse input clutch. The lining on the clutch peels off, allowing the clutch piston to travel too far to apply the clutch, breaking the rubber piston seals.. Holden Trimatics & Commodore 4L60E + Turbo 700's have the same problem. |

it happened almost instantly, here was no warning it was even on its way, one application it was working, the next felt like massive slip. Is it a cheapish fix or am I lining myself up for some $$?

Similar thing happened to my reverse gear dave. Ended up being an overhaul of the box.

It's a cheap fix once the box is out - that's if you only want to repair that problem. The box doesn't have to be fully stripped to fix it. Pull the pump out, the alloy C1, C2, C4 clutch drum & it's the next drum one after that. The 2 - 4 front band runs around it.
How many KM's has it done ? |

I was told by a reputable automatic transmission place that if the if a transmission is only slipping in first or reverse that there is usually big money involoved.....
first sign of slipping i get my automatic transmissions looked at.... |

Yep, she's rebuild time for it.....
Those other clutch packs will also be worn out - If you are considering a manual conversion for it, nows the time. Unless you want to spend $2K - $2.5K on a BTR97 rebuild ? The peeling C3 reverse input clutch problem can also happen around the 70 - 100K KM mark and then it can be repaired cheaply, but if it's done 200K + KM's, it's full rebuild time... |

Sounds like you should chuk a manual in it dave.
Fuken autos... If there wasn't so many sissy bltch divers out there everything but the lwbs would be manual.

if a complete rebuild is somewhere near 2k, its still a hell of a lot cheaper than a 5 or ideally a 6 speed conversion.
I would love to do a manual conversion, I know the minister of finance would not be releasing the funds any time soon to allow this to happen, I kinda need reverse in my car, so as usual time and $$ may win this. Unless someone has a complete AU V8 conversion laying around that they may want to release cheap? can only hope. Until it actually gets to the trans mechanics ultimately will not know anything, the idea behind this thread is to nut out some possible causes and get a rough idea on solutions. Its just a big Taxi gearbox right?

Mal Wood are the only source for a T56 bellhousing to suit the Falcon AFAIK. The T56 conversion is around $9k....
Shame it's too late, but I sold the complete 5 speed conversion from my AU for $1500. (V8 T5, Clutch, flywheel, tailshaft and pedal box). With enough looking around a bargain can be had!

Problem is, it needs to be fixed sooner rather than later, its handy going forwards 99% of the time, but every now and then I also need to go in reverse.
I have got a few PM's as well from people refering me to various tans shops, I appreciate the leads. I an getting it looked at on thursday locally, that suits me providing the price is ok and the guy knows what he is talking about. I want to rebuild not exchange as the T series boxes as a bit different to standard, in the valve bodies and pump. I would love to do a manual conversion, but in time I guess, unless a complete T5 conversion pops up in the next few days. There is only so much that can go wrong with the box it appears, just costs a decent amount to get it fixed. Guess it will get beefed up a touch before it gets a cam and tune. I know where the money for the box is coming from now
