My EL gli experiences rough gear changes and holds the gears too long. Could this be due to a faulty ECU and is this a common problem with EL and similar fords?
I had the same problem with the previous auto and now the same thing is happening with this one too, that is why I changed it. Any help with this would be very much appreciated.

May just be a throttle calibration.
Drive car until normal operating temperature. 1. Apply park brake and start engine, make sure A/C is off and steering wheel not moved during calibration. 2. Place in D and let idle for 1min minimum 3. Turn off engine and turn key to last step before starting (cluster guages should be lit up) and press accelerator to floor and hold for 1min minimum. 4. Turn off key, release accelerator and place in P 5. Start engine and test drive. This calibration should be done if the battery is ever disconnected. |

Thanks a million joolz, I tried the throttle calibration method as you discribed and "presto," it worked perfectly. My auto changes very well now and doesn't clunk any more when it changes up or down, and is quite smooth to drive now.
Tell me though, how did you come by this useful information? Regards Dave

I may have misread that post of yours there joolz... though how will it effect gear changes?
(keep in mind im not auto savvy as I've only had manual falcs) |

Basically the throttle calibration allows the transmission to know accurately where the throttle is to then select the appropriate gear. As already said this should be performed if ever the battery is disconnected. This procedure can be found in any repair manual.

I see, so its applicable to autos only then?
I just bought a mont for a run around for a bit so I'll have to try it on it. |
