i have a 97 supercharged EL GHIA. with 150k on it.
the box is fine in the morning, silky smooth, performs and operates as it should. BUT!! for example say your in peak hour traffic...after about 10-20mins sitting in traffic the changes become very rough from 1-2 and there is almost a slip ( like a double clutch) from 2-3rd. never slips on long hauls or when its cold. so im not sure weather its the computer playing tricks on it, as i believe the GHIA's have the tickford or XR6 shift patterns in there 4spds. ANY IDEAS i just dumped the fluid 2 weeks ago, and filled it up with high temp REDLINE ATF. which made a miniscule difference. |

pretty sure this describes the problem i have with mine aswell! i currently have a transmission oil cooler..was on the car when i bought it. about the size of the average novel?
anyone else had a similar problem? was a larger oil cooler the fix?

maybe try a thicker oil, then when it heats up it will be a bit thicker and it might shift smoothly

i just ran through $135 redline high temp atf. which is pretty much luxury for this box and it still did nothing.
i have a feeling its more of an electrical thing rather then a mechanical. because the box is still strong and shifts well. but when its hot it just slams 2nd gear. mine is also fitted with an oil cooler for the trans. ill ask tomorrow at work, hopefully they can shed some light on it. |

also i inspected the box. the tray was as clean as a whistle upon inspection. no signs of fragments of any kind.
really like to solve this problem. because its realllllllly annoying not having the ability to cruise in stop and go traffic. |

you may be right with electrical, it could be the trans temp sensor

S5 shift solenoid is on the way out.

yeah i have heard about the solenoids going bad on the EL 4speeds. but its running fine from cold, and i presume a solenoid wouldnt be an intermittent failure but a complete failure.
could be the temp sender. ill have a word to the boys tomorrow. good thing about these box's is they have been around for 20 years so someone will know whats going on. |

Not an expert but I would also say a solenoid. The boxes I had tended to get worse when they were warmer and when I gave it some curry. Use to make a massive clunk.

how much would a solenoid set me back?
is it hard to fit. im not to worried about fittin it myself.. but with the car being on ultralows, i have to travel a fair way to use a friends service pit. if its a 5min job ill pay a mechanic 40 bucks to swap the unit out |

Dude to fit the solenoid the pan has to come of, oil has to be drained out and im sure the valve body has to be removed to change it then back together again. Its not a 5min job but it is very common. No mechanic will do it for $40 bucks maybe $100-150 and they will. Then you need to buy the S5 which are not cheap then oil again.

bugger.
i get most of my parts at wholesale price as i work for a autoshop. so the solenoid is not to much of a hassle. p****d off i put in $135 gearbox oil but. its 2 weeks old haha. so you just need to remove the valve body? im guessing that all lies beneath the filter somewhere? i could probably do it myself, but what else is there worth doing whilst im under there? do these transmissions have those acumulators? i forget what there called, but there on most electronically controlled transmissions, its like a little piston or spring setup that helps with smooth shifting, and that can sometimes get filled up with sludge. |

Yep im very sure the valve body needs to be removed to change the solenoids. There is about 5 or 6 solenoids that all control smooth shifting. When they wear out they cause your problems. I have a theory of how exactly they work but i wont say in case im wrong and i get hammered. The S5 solenoid is the most common for playing up. I think there is a piston thing in the gearbox but its only used for reverse. If im wrong i dont mind being corrected.
