Having recently acquired some new 18" rims, and hearing alot about people hitting potholes and buckling/damaging them im paranoid about how strong 18"/19" rims are.
Last night driving on the highway i gave the front left wheel a good test when i hit a massive sharp bump in the road and jolted the living f**k out of me and my Slipknot CD, but the wheel seems to be ok..... or maybe will develop a crack over time?? Anyone here have experiences with buckled/cracked rims caused from everyday potholes on aussie roads? Or am i worrying about nothing?

Try to avoid as much as reasonably possible, but if you've bought brand name rims, or from a reputable seller, you've really got nothing major to worry about.

If one was to damage a wheel caused directly by crap public roads.... suburban or highway, can a claim be made against council or main roads?

From what i've heard, they need to have record in the computer about a complaint on the same part of the road otherwise you have no hope trying to get money out of them.

Yeah 'EL XR8' on here made a claim against a council, and they reimbursed the cost for repair. Vague memory, think he took pics of the pot hole and damage and sent them a letter with the location and date etc. etc. He will hopefully see this thread and give more info, he's an expert on pot holes causing rim damage

thats the main reason i changed my 20s to down to 19s, i didnt think 18s would be that bad as there is still plenty of tire between you and the road???

i went from 16s to 20s
 i hit a small pot hole and it felt like the front strut flew through my bonnet... my 19s feel HEAPS better... 1 inch makes a huge difference, ask any girl and theyll agree

I think its mainly because of King Springs more than the rim size, my car is like a fuken rock with 17s n kings supers compared to my mates slightly chopped XRs (my old springs lol, shuda kept em) with 18s.

The important thing with low profile tyres, is keep the pressure up. Low pressure prevents the tyre from protecting the rim.
Ignore the tyre placard, look at the max pressure the tyre is rated for and take 5psi off. This removes some of the comfort of the ride, but protects the rim.

especially if you have cheap tyres with weak side walls, you need to keep well over 40 psi in them

thats an interesting thought.
with 18's i think 37-38 psi is the recommended pressure? |

it really depends on how your tyres react to the amount of pressure your putting into them, if they feel like they collapsse too much when you enter a driveway or something, they probably need more air. i run about 42psi in my 19s... sometimes cheap chinese tyres require more air as they are weak in the side walls and tend to squash easily
