IRS helps drifting control, but live rear axle is easier to kick.

wider tyres are easier to control once out, but obviously more expensive & you need more power to do it...

a couple of years back there was a shootout between a group of imports and a group of V8's.....

one guy in a plain looking VN SS made the collective import crowd look pathetic when it came to drifting

My mate is a f**k awesome driver and he said one of the easiest cars to get sideways and recover in was his old VH commonwhore. All he did was a little suspension work and was all good.
Hes VN SS was a bucket even new.
He loves his turbo VR4. That thing is a gun and would probably show most of us up.

Galant VR4?
What's so good about it?
4g63 engine is awesome, but a lancer GSR is sooo much of a better option.
The 4WS is a pain in the a**.

veeate, yeah that grey vn drifts in DA... not quite as much angle as the import guys tho!
but remember it would weigh less then a falcon too :S damn heavy falcons :(

Its actually quite the opposite, your number one and first concern is suspension setup then power.

Just look at all the AE86's running around in D1 comps in Japan they kill cars that are 10 years newer and have 4x as much power. They are known for being one of the best cars around to slide many of which do it with the small stock n/a 4 cyclinder. Its the chassis setup, weight distribution and of course the suspension tweaks which give them that status.


I would start off with coilovers, swaybars and a good wheel alignment adjusting camber etc as neccesary to suit the cars style.

umm..your forgetting a very crucial part......driver skill....

just to note, a trueno or AE86 also has a live axle rear end, supporting lateral movement with a pan hard rod, simple macpherson strut front end and only 86-100odd kw @ the motor in stock form. I know this cause the boys and I worked extensively on one a few months back. We now love to hate jap stuff, they just arnt as logical as ford :roll:

yeah coz Tsuchiya is drifting a heavy underpowered falcon isnt he? Basics are ok, and you will see the first part of what he says is to use the handbrake.. well an EA_ED handbrake isnt drift friendly imo :P So i have been trying to enter corners with a scandinavian flick (thanks to rollin for some tips).. Getthing the car sideways before the corner is a bit of a handful but i have been getting better, its just keeping the power on and holding a decent angle to link to the next corner. I find my car isnt powerful enough to keep this angle it dies in its a**...Im sure with a turbo and coilovers/sway bars it will be able to drift much better.

Are you running on 14/15" stockies? Will be much easier to hold the slide through the corner than if you had 17's on for example.

Also is it possible to change the handbrake to ef/el style in earlier e-series then you could just wack one of those drift button covers that go on the handbrake.

so anyone got a block of land covered in concrete so some of us can have some fun drifting without having to ram a tree or picket fences? would be fun =D

btw blackjack......i have an EA in the wrecking ;) would be fun if i hadn;t killed the engine.
