At the risk of seeming stoopid ,can you tell me what a shift kit is.What does it do and what are its advantages.BTW its an el 4 speed auto
How much does it cost

Lol, if only we had old posts from FMv1.0 - was hundreds of threads on the little buggers!!
The basic idea is to get the automatic to shift gears harder and faster, making for better acceleration through the gears. Used to be done my remachining the valve body, alter the way fluid travelled through the box. Similar theory for electronically controlled boxes, but now all really done is change the solenoid that regulates line pressure or modify the signal that controls this solenoid. Usually the name of the game is to increase line pressure, make shifts faster and firmer.

i bought my electronic shift kit from ebay they r $45.00 and they r always available i took to auto trans specalist to install works really great

They aren't that hard to install as long as you can strip and cut wire and solder. Just a little fiddly to do - much like any electrical work in a car.

so is there any downsides to the shiftkit? like gearbox wear etc. And does it make much of a difference?

nar the kit is better for the box as there is less slippage between the bands when the box changes gears. and yes there is a difference! most cars rev out more and chirp 1-2 change

Steve - the increased revs are really just a side effect and are not really noticable. It's fine with pedal to the metal in power mode, no over revving.

Question, Frank says that it's better for the box, but what about the diff? Is it worse for the diff?
