G'day Guys
Yes this is my second topic for the day. Just wanted to know the pros and cons of getting a shift kit. I know most of the pros, but I would like to know whether there are any cons. For example, higher strain on the gearbox, or higher strain on the tail shaft, things like that. I know that they will not be immediate problems, but can putting a shift kit cause problems later down the track. Thanks Pete |

Well the cons of a shift kit by my knowledge are:
overheating gearbox if driven hard upper and lower bushes on the diff will prematurely deteriorate because of sudden jerking uni joints are under stress (unlikely to break) |

hi just want to add something, made the adjustable shiftkit for my mustang and after 2 months 3rd and 4th gear are gone.. not sure if it was caused from the shiftkit or it was just ready to go.
car is running 10psi with gt45 4Litre POWER!

My el had a shiftkit and at some stage in the past, a turbo...
It has no second now and I need to change out the box... |

Man that would suck aye, putting something in thats supposed to be better for the trans only to find it makes you drop 1 or 2 gears in the process
I guess it all depends how hard you increase the shift, you dont want it to be stupidly hard where it bangs into gear, you just want it to shift into the next gear a bit quicker, with the BTR you'll find it tends to slip into the next gear. If you can get it to shift quicker into the next gear without being too harsh and making the whole driveline thump when it kicks the next gear, it should reduce the slipping between gear changes and reduce heat. |

Shift kits don't stuff the box ( usually )...but are hard on the uni's & diff, upper trailing arm bushes, trailing arm mountings on the body.
Usually the clutch packs last longer because they are not being engaged slowly, but quicker and a harder bite ( pressures raised a little ).

I have been running the shift kit i made using the tech doco from this site for about 2 yrs now, my auto was a bit flogged out before the kit went in. I have not switched it off in over a year(the switch is hidden behind dash now) and the auto still goin fine. Still Chirps into 2nd when given a little bit extra.
Cant really say if had flogged my rear bushes as my diff is taking care of that. |

The reason you have no 2nd gear is because you have snapped the 2nd gear band. This is a common fault in the 4 speed autos. First will still work fine, it just seems to be stuck in first for ages, and if you can get the road speed up high enough, it will shift into top. I have had this happen without the shift kit, so any extra line pressure of harder shifts into second will just cause this to happen easier/sooner. Stay away from shift kits on these auto's, if you want a snappy shift, fit a 5 speed!
