Sigh, I bet there is like a sticky for this somewhere and I know there are TONS of threads on this - but I have a few questions about shift kits.
"Jesus not again" I hear most of you say lol. My car is a 1993 EB Falcon GLi Sedan - pretty much stock, except it's lowered and has a sports exhaust (I say sports exhaust because it came with it, obviously not stock, just the previous owner put it on, and I don't know the brand/it's rusted out). ANYWAY - I have been reading a lot of stuff on the forums seeing as thought I didn't join all that long ago and I have been hearing about these things called shift kits. I had no idea what they were until reading posts here and from what I can gather they are used to make the shifting in an auto more firm and to put it simply; give it more kick. My questions about them are this: 1. Will I gain power/torque from installing one? 2. Will it rape my fuel levels? 3. Is it worth it (from what I gather it is, but yeah)? 4. While I'm driving, can I switch it on and off on the fly? 5. Are the ones from here: http://www.shiftkits.com.au/ any good? 6. Which type should I get? I'm interested in getting the fully variable one as I would like to have more control over it but yeah, opinions? I think that's basically all I wanted to say/ask, so if anyone can point me in the right direction of where to find more information on them that would be great, it's just that I don't want to get one and find out it like wrecks something in my car Also yeah, sorry for the amount of seemingly irrelevant questions, just like to get as much info as I can - and also if there is a whole thread already dedicated to most of this, sorry. I have found some info, but not really things like can I use it on the fly and what sort of power gain, if any, I can expect to get. Cheers, Michael |

ok here we go.
ive got the shiftkits.com.au one. the stage 3 variable one 1. no- changes line pressure to s5 solenoid, not adding horsepower 2. dunno . dont check mine as i wouldnt have done mods if concerned bout fuel consumption. 3. hell yeah. even a few tenths off a quarter time arre worth the effort, not sure how much it cuts down off times as havnt run down quarter-yet. 4. dunno as i havnt done it.. not game to try.just wait till u stop at the next lights if ya wanna turn off. 5. yes . 6. your choice. i wanted variable for more control..dial up over a quarter then i chirp 1-2 2-3. down on low dial setting quick not overly firm snappy changes.. hope this helped a bit. i tried...

I read somewhere here that you needed to turn the engine off to change the settings, does this matter? Like could I really stop at lights and just change the firmness - because that's what I want to do

Oh that was the other question - does it matter what setting the Power/Eco switch is on when you use the shift kit? Is there a setting that you have to leave it on for it to work properly, like leave it on eco and let the kit do the work or what?

From having a stage 1 shiftkit.com installed on my EL falcon for 1 week here are your answers;
1) 1st and 2nd gear hold out under full throotle for an extra 10km/hr. I get gear changes at 6000rpm instead of 5500rpm. No flat spot between 1-2nd gear change. 2) tRIP METER SHOWS NO SIGNIFICANT CHANGE, ALTHOUGH I HAVE BEEN PRETTY HEAVY ON THE RIGHT FOOT. 3) i RECKON OVER A QUARTER AT LEAST 0.2-0.5 SEC OFF NORMAL TIME, SO YEAH WORTH IT. 4) YES, I HAVE SWITCHED IT OFF WHILE DRIVING AND GOES BACK TOO NORMAL STRAIGHT AWAY, NO PROBLEMS. 5) YES, I HAVE A STAGE 1 KIT FROM THEM, ALL THE HOME JOBS SEEM TO HAVE LITTLE PROBLEMS, LIKE DONT REV OUT LIKE MINE OR GO INTO LIMP d**k MODE ALL THE TIME. 6) It's up to you, how much money you want too spend. I wouldn't get a stage 2 kit as most people use the 2nd shift switch which is the same as the stage 1 shift. CHEERS....

i have a switchable shift kit that was made from parts from Jaycar. off it changes gears normally, switched on its very aggressive. this can be altered while driving.
My car is slower down the quarter using it (G-tech tested), i lose about .2sec 1/4mile. it chirps 1-2-3 gears. it is fun in the wet while punching through 1-2 (very drifty). cost me $8 in parts. it is not worth it in my opinion. but if you must - http://www.fordmods.com/forums/viewtopi ... ift%20kits

Mine is home-made with parts from jaycar, -definitely worth it!
It will be annoying if u want to drive normally- very harsh, but hey that is why it is switched. Only switch on when u are going to be using full throttle, simple. And yes u can switch on and off on the fly, only be careful not to sw in the middle of a gearchange, because that is when the circuit is active, - but even if u do, the worst that happens is the ecu logs an error and goes into limp home mode (3rd gear only) which u can reset simply by turning off and restarting engine. Hope this sheds some light.

Thanks everyone for replying, I think I might get one and just see how it goes, but I'm still curious about wether or not it matters what setting the Power/Eco switch is on when you use the shift kit.

http://www.fordmods.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=2378 just make one for yourself. made my adjustable one for $20 my kit took two tenths off the quarter last week. it is worth it, and if you dont like it, you can just turn it off. you can do it on the run but i've found with mine i need to manually shift up and down a few times to get it to register. the pwr switch wont do anything to it. pwr only effects WHEN the gear shifts

Actually, If 5 or more people want to get together, i could make some adjustable ones. for say $40 bucks or something? maybe cheaper cause i'll get a discount from jaycar. it'll have a on/off/LHM switch on it. could even extend the lead to the adjuster so it could be put next to the pwr switch.
anyone interested?

i made mine ages ago ~$10, good fun for a while, i forgot to test for gains/losses on the quarter...do'h
one negative your passengers will not like it at low speeds, cos it really jams gears even under sfa throttle. |
