when shifting into 3rd and 4th if i force it in to hard i hear a clunking sound.

is this my synchros or just the shifting mechanism ie will be remedies by a new shifter from wreckers or a quickshifter.

if its the synchros how do i replace? does the box have to come out?

or am i completely missing the point.

clutch is on its way out but dont think that would have much to do with it...

cheers.

btw it is an EA 5 speed MPI

thats u pushing the shifter to far! causing pain and hurt to the poor box! a quickshifter will only fix this if it has positive stops and they're adjusted properly.

nah its not that.. 1st and 2nd dont do it when i shift hard and 3rd will only go in with no noise if i shift gently, even a normal solid shift will make it make the sound.

anyone else? i'm confinced its the 3rd/4th gear synchros

If your clutch is on its way out, then theres your problem.
Chances are the clutch is still slightly engaged when you depress the pedal, You could slightly advance the cable to enable more disengaging, in turn this could remedy your issue. Or even stress out the 'worn' pressure plate more.

Test your synchros without the clutch If comfortable enuff.
You should be able to match engine speed with road speed and change without a crunch if all in good nick.

To replace synchro's its a box out, and cluster dismantle.

Only being in 4th gear would indicate a synchro, as if it were all gears it'll be shifter, mechs, endplay etc.

Also change the oil, it may do wonders
