Hi all. After some first hand experience i thought i would share some of my findings with you guys. We all know that auto to manual (T5) tail shafts are interchangeable. But based on what i found there are some noticeable difference with the cv joint part on the end that goes into the gear box.
In the below piks i am comparing two auto tail shafts (one from an EB XR6 Auto and one from an EL GHIA with tickford everything auto), with an EF XR6 manual tail shaft. As you can see the manual tail shaft has this huge steel dampner on the end that goes into the gear box. What i found with the 'auto' tail shaft on the manual box is that when i would take my foot off the clutch with out accelerating is that i would have a very annoying clunk sound. when i fit the 'manual' tail shaft this noise has completely gone and can not be heard any more. Not sure if this has been discussed before although based on this its safe to say you can use the auto tail shaft but you will have a better result with the manual one. I believe this heavy steel dampener weighs the tail shaft down on the gearbox end not allowing back lash from the tail shaft.

I noticed the same thing on my AU. The manual one had the dampner and the auto one didnt.
AU tailshafts are a different length between auto and manual though. |

hhmmm interesting...
they probably just had them in a pile and put what ever on the next car off the line. considering i hadnt seen this dampner on any auto i had been under, and saw it on the manual i thought i was on to something lol... the dampner made it noticably heavier and really did make a big improvment for me anyway... interesting feedback though thanks guys.

ive noticed the same thing, i have an original manual shaft and it dont have the dampener..an original eb ghia auto shaft with no dampener
and again i previously had an efxr8 auto shaft that had the dampener.. strange... |

i always thought it was for the "park" option the auto offers

And to further confuse the issue, my EB Wagon Auto Alloy tailshaft has a dampener on it too.
Cheers BenJ

The donor ea I had for my manual conversion had no dampner neither did my auto ef shaft. But then again the ea-eb1's shafts I think are slightly different in the uni-joints. I do also have that issue where I engage the clutch to get moving there is that same clunk where it feels like there is heaps of backlash in the diff. Yet to try one with dampner.
Anyone got a spare yoke with dampner that will fit my ef shaft? Cheers Sam

I am currently running the manual EA box in my ED, using an EBII auto tail shaft ( no balancer ), and have no vibe/noise issues whatsoever.

I doubt a clunk would have anything to do with anything other than gearbox/Diff slap or buggered unijoints.

My 5 speed doesn't have one...
I have no clunking and the diff gears have very minimal backlash... Cheers, Tim

The big heavy round steel thingy is a dampner. It is to reduce the SOUND that is transmitted up the driveshaft tube, caused by backlash in the diff. When I was doing driveshafts, I was told by a Ford engineer that they were matched to the diffs at the factory when the diff backlash is "on the high side of acceptable" rather than have the customer complain about the noise. There is no rule as to which car or shaft type they were fitted to.
If you get your diff rebuilt, it can then be removed. If it comes loose on the yoke, throw it away. By the time it works loose, the diff backlash will have changed anyway. If you have a noisy/sloppy diff centre, one of these shafts may reduce the noise, but it doesnt solve the problem. Get the diff fixed.

Wasn't that the idea of puting thick cardboard rolled up inside the tailshaft???.....to stop noise???
The damper is for vibes.....as is the rubber mounted weight you find bolted to the extension housing. There are 2 different dampers.....a thin one, about an 1" thick, and the big one, nearly 2" thick. They tended to be found on wagons, Fairlanes and Fairmonts, some XR6's, utes & vans.....depending on transmission fitted.
