I've been told by a few people that a skyline diff center fits into the AU S1 (non irs) housing. is this true? if so what skyline and what's the ratio?

With the Skyline (R31), it depends on whether it is a sedan, wagon, auto or manual, as to what ratio diff was fitted...anywhere from a 3.45, 3.72, 3.89.
Pintara's ( P31) of the same body style had 4.11's.

NO.....definately not a straight bolt in thing....you'll need to set up the side bearing preload, and the pinion bearing preload, and the carrier placement so as to get a good tooth pattern, as well as pinion depth too, for a good tooth pattern.
Have you got a Gregories w/shop manual ????......have look in the Diff rebuild section and you'll see what I mean.

yeah its pretty short but the car revs to 6300 so its ok. Its pretty useless on the street, 2nd gear wheels spins alot when you put your foot down aswell.
