Hey we just finished putting the new auto in my ed, on 1st startup i noticed we had some smoke from the back of the block and coming out of the transmission dipstick we also dropped about 50ml of oil looked like it just ran out of the inspection plate... Any ideas

Torgue Converter / Pump Seal on the gearbox.
Did you have the torque converter on the engine and then mount the gearbox to it?? |

Does sound like the front pump seal.
Did you pull the converter off the box at all? - anything that could damage it |

LOL. Its almost impossible to get a trans into the car with the converter mounted on the flywheel WITHOUT screwing it up.
The converter has to be already in the gearbox (use a strap to hold it in, or a bent piece of metal - or something) then mounted to the engine. Then the converter gets pulled forward and the 4 screws done up. Oh - and you'll need a new front seal for the converter. Dont go to Ford. Go to a trans. shop. Much cheaper Nigel |

thanks nigel, what i meant was i think they left the tc bolted to the flywheel and slid the tranny off... sounded like a good idea at the time get a few mates round for a few beers, darts and mabey an engine and box swap... lol

had the same happen to me a few years ago.
unfortunatly its a whole box off again one. i brought a cheap set of various size O ring seals from supershlt and put a fitting one on and was fine.

well i was thinking over getting it serviced anyway so i might drop it out and take it down to the pros and have them refit the whole shbang. well seeing as were talking you wouldnt happen to know why the engine would be idling high to low (its a steady change up n down) i was thinking it might be because of different computers but i dunno

had exact same thing happen putting a new engine in my wifes old corona - thought it had all gone well until it started bleeding everywhere... on those, the seal looks like a combination o ring and metal strip - of course, the only thing that will work is the exact same new bit from toymota.... so....engine cost me $50, did the whole job myself in 3 days - only to have to spend $220 on a new seal that came from japan and took 8 weeks.

lol similar got given a ed that i diddnt expect to like but did very much, but as it turns out its cheaper to drop in a donor engine and box i picked up a fairmont for $200 with a nice engine all country kms and a few other nice parts so this will most likley be the most expensive part so far
edit* the head for the old motor was going to set me back about $1200 |
