Had a bit of a spirited drive home the other night in my AU1 xr8.

Anyway, got into my driveway and noticed smoke pouring out from under the guards off the brakes. Not just a waft but a fair amount of smoke

The brakes arnt rubbing and the pads still have plenty of life in them. Is this normal? Does it damage them? Will replacing the pads with a different compound do anything?

A brake upgrade is planned for the future, but have a few other priorities first.

If there getting very hot you might find you'll start warping your rotors - giving your brake shudder and what not.

With standard pads that is to be expected. Either get pads with a higher heat range or don't do it again..

Its because its an AU1 with the crap brakes.

Last time I drove an AU1, did one hard stop from 150km/h and had smoke and little red things spitting from the discs, plus the discs were looking a little red hot.

Had to wait 10 mins till they cooled enough so the brakes were actually braking the car.

Suggestion might be to look into some slotted or cross drilled rotors, and some decent pads as more of a priority than the other ones you have lined up first.

As One Drone said, standard pads will smoke badly when pushed. One thing you should try to do is drive around sedately for 5 minutes or so after you've given the brakes a hiding before parking the car. It will give them a chance to lose most of their heat and reduce the risk of warping and cracking.
I made a habit of doing this with standard brakes and never had a warped disk to worry about.

The priorities arnt to do with the car.

I'll try the cooling down thing next time.

The au1 brakes do suck. Only down point of the car.

Ill go looking for some better pads
