what are they? where are they? what do they control?

They are in the Auto Transmission, they mainly control the shifting patterns.
The round things with the wires attached, they are the solenoids. The picture is not exact but enough for you to get the idea. |

could this be the reason my car wont kick down properly when i put my foot down sometimes it will then other times its like i have to time it right then put my foot down and itl kick revs up an take off other times it wont?
