on hot days my speed sensative power steering doesnt seem to be light. il start the car leave parking bay all is good get on the road speed up then slow down for a corner and the ssp doesnt seem to kick in cos the steering is really heavy but i dont ge this problem on cool days. if i stop and then wait and then take of its light. is there a switch somewhere thats just not liking the heat or on its way out?

There is a solenoid ( on a duty cycle ), its mounted at the rack.
Have you tried changing the power steer fluid????
Use Ford p# R1-424 power steer fluid.

where is the solenoid?

Theres only the one soleniod on the rack on the drivers side.

the only wires i know of going to the rack are for the power steering switch but it isnt related the speed sensitive side of things

There is a solenoid on the rack and no its not the stockie p/s switch only EL Ghias have the solenoid, thay run a diffrent rack, pump and wiring loom. the solenoid is controlled by the ecu and the EL Ghia ecu does throw fault codes for the sensitive steer.

Rack and pump are the same as any other falcon model.

The only difference to the rack is the top where the steering shaft is. It is different to the other models to suit the fluid lines and SSPS soleonid.

And the SSPS wiring is in every car that left the factory...

But as for the problem, I'd do a full fluid change. The correct fluid is MobilFluid 424 that you can get from any Mobil servo. This fluid is better under heat and pressure than the traditional "Red Generic Power Steering Fluid" that most people buy. I tried there red stuff once before and found that the SSPS didn't work as it did, so now the only stuff I use. The only time the steering starts to get heavy is after I've given the car a good workout, and the fluids all get pretty hot.

Worst case its the SPSS solenoid starting to crap itself, but like anything, a fluid change is the first thing to try.

seems the wireing is standard on EL, the pump is the same and technically the rack is the same beside having the diffrent top housing for the soleniod and lines.

Yes, Aarons post was incorrect... Questions like these are best posted to a technically minded EL Ghia owner.

I did a SSPS conversion to a friends EL Fairmont a while back. All it needed was the rack. Everything else was there.
