Sounds like your having a real run of bad luck mate.
I keep reading about XRs having alloy tailshafts. I have a 96 EF XR6 5sp and the bastard has a steel shaft. Whats the go? Tim |

hi
im not 100% sure but it may be a ex police car..(check compliance plate for option 20) my old eb xr8 was a ex police car and it had a steel tailshaft.and had no speed limiter.. but my mates eb ghia v8 has a alloy tailshaft and is limited to 180km per hour.. i could be wrong but... i just put 2 and 2 togather! |

nope not ex police, only 2 owners before me and i have all original purchase receipts. just a bit of trivia, it was bought for $50,000.
Tman, i thought the alloy shaft was superior to the steel one? your post suggests the oposite? its all very confusing. I just want to know if i should be upgrading to the better shaft or if i already have it. Tim |

yea
i get mixed answers when i ask that question ?? i personaly think the steel one is stronger.. i thought they used the alloy one to save weight. plus being lighter less drag on the drive line giving more hp at wheels???? also my ea spac has a steel tailshaft which i think all ea's have.. and it doesnt have a speed limiter and it has clocked well over the 180km per hour .. ?? what about the old valiant RT chargers they were getting about 130mph aprox (210kms per hour) and they had steel tailshafts same as the famous GT falcon... |

I think it's more the Autos that are speed limited, the manuals are not.
All of the EL auto ECU's I've seen have speed limiters, no matter what the donor car was (stock, cop, XR, fairlane).

Likewise with my factory manual EF. I think this has been discussed at length previously!

I never got a definitive answer, so I'm running a box from an EL XR.
