so say a toyota celica 4wd or wrx 4wd, can easily snap a shaft just as easy as a ford could reaching speeds over 180?

No it's a Ford thing. Big (long) car, long one piece tail shaft.
High speed + high vibrations (poorly balanced shaft, road imperfections) = destruction. With BA/BF they've gone to two piece shafts, and WRX's et. al. are smaller, have a diff in the middle, so two much shorter shafts.

From front to rear: Slip yoke, UJ, CVJ then double cardin joint on rear. Also alot of poeple lower their falcons too much resulting in the driveshaft hitting the floor which will cause damage to the driveshaft tubing/balance weight welds and possibly resulting in failure. |

how much is a two piece tailshaft and what are the advantages over the one piece apart from being able have higher speeds?
Is it smoother as higher speeds?

Now no one else needs to do this, it's been done. we can keep a secret |

It must be an alloy t/s thing. In my "stupid" ill say it again "stupid" younger days i had my EB over 200 too many times too mention and never had one go, hell my mates stock gli would do 200 no worries again no failure.
Before i had my EB my XE's did over 200 no worries. Note: all had steel tail shafts. I still have the same tailshaft in the EB now 8 years later. I remember years ago all the commo guys where going from two piece to 1 piece steel shafts as they where blowing the centre c/v joints in the big h/p cars. Its got to be the alloy shafts, they cant handle the rpm. Or maybe the uni joint at the front of the alloy t/s are weaker hence allowing the t/s to move out of the "round" which ends up in the failure about a foot down from the uni and the destruction of the rear of the gearbox.

Mine failed dead centre of the shaft.
I figure one of two things happened. - Harmonics killed it. But the dyno operator says he's had shafts go before, and he always felt it (the vibrations) beforehand - he said there was no such warning with mine. - Gear box seized near instantly, and the rotational force of the wheels/rollers applied excess torque on the shaft, essentially twisting it in half. Both would of course result with a break in the exact middle.

Out of interest, where is your EEC modding thread? Interested to see what you can do to the thing.
But after seeing those pics, I see that speed limiters really are good!

Hmm interesting Data_mine, definitely a plausible theory if it snapped half way. Is it possible that an alloy shaft being submitted to clutch dumps and other abuse and alloy being brittle and not as flexible as steel is causing stress fractures and once spinning at such a high rpm is causing them to fail?

s**t ay,never heard of that happening before, anyone know what speed the limiter is set at cos my EF Mont hits the 210 no probs, been known to be a blur on the road at 2-3 in the mornin between perth and kalgoorlie, lol maybe one day it wont be a blur but a hell of a mess with a pair eyeballs rolling down the middle of the road

If you're on gas the limiter doesn't work (the limiter cuts the injectors, none of those on gas).
But it should be 180km/h.
