Other than the tailshaft design itself, tailshaft breakage would mainly be a product of tailshaft rpm, torque, shock loads, joints, and harmonics.
If say you spin it at 6000rpm at no torque, it won't be at all interested in breaking. If however you have a hot motor, the shaft could break at lower speeds than the limited speed. For example, imagine a stocko slowly climbing to 200km/h, with no shaft breakage, versus a modified car screaming to 180km/h in 9sec . . . the torque would be huge . . . plus rpm and harmonics . . . snap goes the tailshaft. On a dyno, the speed can be kept constant but the input from the motor and resistance from the dyno can be increased or decreased, placing greater or lesser load on the tailshaft. Also to consider, if a unijoint is at zero angle, the speeds of the shafts either side of the joint remain constant. But if the unijoint is angled and one shaft rotates at a constant speed, the other shaft will accelerate twice and deccelerate twice during every rotation. The greater the angle the greater the accelerations and decelerations. This creates a torque pulsation through the shaft, which can cause a harmonic. Double-cardan joints either reduce or eliminate the pulsations, i can't remember at the moment.

A double-cardan joint merely reduces the pulsations, it's still a byproduct of the changing shaft angles.
CV joints fixes this entirely which is why FWD, AWD, and now IRS RWDs use them. FPV use them for all tail shaft joints too.

When unijoints are used at both ends of the shaft and they are oriented the right way and the angles at the joints are equal and opposite, the pulsations between the inputs and outputs at the ends of the shaft are cancelled out. And whilst the shaft itself still pulsates in speed, the torque doesn't pulsate. But even if the angles are equal at static ride height, as the suspension goes up and down the angles will likely become different, and do in the case of the falcon. A lowered car might be in a worse scenario than a std height car, though the angle of the axle can be fixed.

ok this all sounds interesting but the million dollar question is does anybody know if theres a shaft from an earlier falcon that will fit the EF/EL ect which would be stronger and eliminate this prob of a weak shaft

e series xr tailshafts were alloy not steel and are much less prone to failure, hence the lack of speed limiters on xrs

If you're serious about doing high speeds, the a two piece custom shaft is the only way to go. It's fairly easy to get them made up.

My car is EB1 Fairmont, it has a 1 piece shaft and im pretty sure its steel. hmmm. ive done 181km/h in mine and it was still pulling but i backed off cos i was scared about the tailshaft failing, so what speed are they most likely to break? i only been that fast once
Also would an alloy EF/EL tailshaft fit my EB? Cheers guys- interesting thread

definitley think 180 is fast enough on the streets!! any faster you are just asking for trouble!! 6250rpm sounds good but

What models came out with speed limiters?
The reason I ask is because my ED futura has been clocked at 221kph, that was a police radar though so probably not even close to accurate. The needle was however quite a way past the 200kph max on the speedo. The only mod the ED has ever had is the exhaust system so was there no limiter on ED's?

I thought all smartlock Falcon's with the exception of the XR's & possibly the police packs were speed limited? So EB2 onwards.
Now i know why older car's had uni's @ both ends of the tail shaft. Seems like a custom 2 piece tail shaft would be a good investment for someone who races their falcon..... I'm running a LPG Injection setup ( Easyjet ) & my speed limiter works properly on both fuels. Cheers ToranaGuy

ED's had a limiter, set at 180kmh.....however, if you fit an EA MPFI ECU, there is no limiter. I found the limiter on the ED when it was up on blocks......no tickets that way.... ....and only takes a few seconds to find out.

Unless that ED's ecu has been tampered with (ie mod chips, EA non limited ecu fit & smartlock bypass fit), no way it was traveling that fast! We all know police radar is not accurate. Enough tests & studies have been done to prove that. Cheers ToranaGuy
