does anyone know the stock rear spring rates for ef XR6?
I need to firm up the back end of the xr and need to know what I'm currently running so I can make step forward instead of sideways or backwards. also, are king spring lows a higher rated spring then the standard xr6 spring? next on the agenda, I will also be looking at a rear sway bar, and need to know what the stock torque rating is of the current bar, anyone got a clue?

cant tell u the exact spring rats
but the lower u go u will find they stiffer the spring sway bar.. the bigger the bar the stiffer the bar

not always the case with going lower, I've had lower springs before that were softer than the OEM specs.

go for Lovells Progressive rate springs, they list an uprated one specific for XR.

do you know what poundage the lovells are? I need to know what I'm going from and to in pounds, instead of its a stiffer spring, I need to know by how much it is stiffer, I don't want to over tighten it back end, at present I think it needs possibly about a further 300-350 pound on the current rates. but without knowing what I currently have I can't get springs made. I can get a set of rears progressivly wound up to about 1050 pounds for about $140 but if I can get the lovells and they are about the same poundage but cheaper, well you see where I'm going.

Spring rates are measured in, normally, lb/in (pounds per inch) So 300-350 ib/in is an extreamly stiff/hard spring in its own right. Do suspension places really give out numbers like 1050 lb springs ? Cheers |

In std trim my EF had 319lb/in fronts and 184lb/in rears. I have since lowered it by 2" in the front and 2.5 in the rear. Springrates now are 378lb/in front (18.5% increase) and 202lb/in rears(9.8% increase). The car was understeering with the lower % rate increase in the rear however it has now balanced itself nicely after fitting an LSD, somehow I originally fitted 238lb/in rear springs but found it to step out too easily in the rear with these.
I have measured the King Low front steady rate springs and have calculated them to be 385lb/in, but I dont know how to measure the rears due to them being a progressive rate spring (nor have I bothered trying to work it out). Original XR6 spec rear springs are also progressive in the rear so to make a fair comparison is going to be really difficult. My advice would be not to change your springs but to work with your sway bars to achieve the desired balance. By fitting harder springs you not only upset your ride quality but also your sideways traction ability. If you want more info on the topic read a book callled Chassis Engineering by Herb Adams, this will give you a broad understanding of suspension dynamics and also educate you in such a way that you will know when some tool at a suspension place is telling you one thing, you will know if he is s**t you or not.

I think they might be full-o-s**t.

On my Targa rally suspension for my EL I run 550lb Eibachs in the front, on Bilstein coil overs, with a 50lb tender spring, and 350lb King Springs Fairlane rear springs, and it is bloody stiff.
1050lb would be like a bit of pipe, no give at all, I think he may have told you some wrong figures......[/img] |
